Windows 8.1 to Windows 8 Pro

I have Windows 8.1 on my computer and I recently bought the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade disk from my university software store. They're both 64 bit. So here is the question, can I go from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8 Pro? I have inserted the upgrade disk but the computer does not do anything with it and it does not show up in the drive, also all that I got was the disk, no key or any information. I know once I have Windows 8 Pro on the computer I can get Windows 8.1 Pro for free.

You should have received a key with the Windows 8 Pro upgrade disc. Check with the store as to why you didn't receive one as you will need it if the upgrade actually works, but I don't think this is a valid upgrade and will not be allowed. You should be able to do a Clean Install though by booting the disc. Again, you will need the key.

Thanks, I will try to get that. Do you know if the Windows Pro 8 upgrade disk includes the full Windows 8 Pro, or does it just add the extra features that come with the Pro version and not include the entire OS?

"Windows 8 upgrade is for Windows Vista or XP users. Upon installation you can install the free 8.1 update available through the Windows Store." (This is core ...but applies equally to Pro - just less restrictive on the underlying OS )

Thus it is the full package - only difference being the key is an upgrade edition key - thus not meant for new installations - there are work-arounds to achieve this however - see the tutorials.

Normally if you wanted to go from Core to Pro you would buy a Pro Pack which is a product key only. You enter that key in "Add Features" and it unlocks the Pro features not included in the Core edition. Its my understanding that the actual upgrade DVD is meant for upgrading from another OS that is not Windows 8. Windows 7 or Vista. Once you get your key you try entering it in Add Features, you might get lucky and it gets accepted. Otherwise I think your looking at reinstalling. I highly doubt you can downgrade from 8.1 to 8.0 the way you want. Technically its a downgrade not an upgrade, and I don't see the install media letting you do it.
