how do i restore windows 8 to a new hard disk

    Hello,

the hard disk of a Samsung Ultra 5 crashed. I have got a new hard disk. How do i restore windows 8 and Samsung drivers to the new hard disk? My friend has an exact notebook. How do i copy the recovery partition from his pc and use it on mine?

On my acer laptop they have a process to make a bootable recovery disk on a USB thumb drive. See if your friend's PC has that ability - should be in the samsung software somewhere. Then you could use the thumb drive to restore your system.

Create a "Recovery Drive" from your friend's PC and use it to perform a "Reset" operation in your system.

If you make the recovery thumb drive, make sure you check the option to "Copy contents from the recovery partition to the recovery drive". If you don't you won't have all the files you need to do the reset. You'll need a large capacity drive too. I needed a 16 GB thumb drive when I created one on my laptop.

    @genet

    Great tutorial mate .

I wonder why Microsoft wrote in their tutorial that "Reset" function can be used to perform a "bare metal" recovery ?.

    Source : Push-Button Reset Overview

If the user needs to replace the hard drive, or completely wipe it, they can use bootable recovery media. Bare-metal recovery performs these processes:

    • The PC boots into Windows RE.
    • Push-button reset identifies the system drive.
    • Push-button reset re-creates and formats each of the partitions specified in the diskpart script.
    • Push-button reset applies the factory image file to the Windows partition.
    • Push-button reset configures Windows RE and the recovery image on the disk.
    • Windows restarts into the OOBE.

How do you install Windows 8 to a blank hard disk from the Windows 8 recovery USB flash drive?
Yup, been there, done that, didn't work. I got the "a required partition is missing" when trying to reset to my new SSD in my laptop. I ended up doing a clean install. Now I know it wasn't just me.

I think i found the answer why "Reset" is not performing a bare metal recovery. According to Microsoft Technet documentations, OEM can customize the "Refresh" and "Reset" process by creating custom XML configuration files. For bare metal recovery, XML variable <DiskpartScriptPath> should be defined and a DISKPART script should be provided. But this is not mandatory and i assume most manufacturers don't use the sample script provided by Microsoft.

    ResetConfig XML Reference

The Diskpart script must recreate each of the partitions needed to restore the hard drive.
If this element is not included, your user won't be able to repartition the hard drive.

I tried this option. I checked the option to "copy content from the recovery partition to the recovery drive". I used a 16GB thumb drive. When i try to use it on the PC with the new hard disk. It starts the recovery and then asks me for an image.

If all else fails Macrium Reflect will copy/Image your friends disk and Restore it to your new Hard drive and its free.

Then you can use the standard Refresh/Restore? to put you back to as shipped from the factory.
