Install Windows 8.1 on a HP

Hello guys!

Well... I explain myself. If you don't understand anything, please tell me and I'll try to explain better.

I have an HP (I don't know the model right now because I'm at university, not at home). I got it for 2 years ago. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium x64, but I'd like to install Windows 8.1.

The problem is that HP won't release the drivers for Windows 8.x, and I have only for Win7. When I tried to install Windows 8 for the first time, and installed all the drivers, cpu's fan can't stop and It ran so fast. And the laptop is burning itself...

Could you know why? I though than Win7 drivers were enough for having Windows 8.x working properly... And, If you don't know, do you know how to install it?

Thanks you so much in advance!

In theory most Win7 drivers should work with Win8 but it's not always the case. The only thing I can think of is for you to install win8.1 nad than use some driver finding program like https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php to try to find better ones. ACPI or equivalent drivers are key word here for adjusting power options.
In addition, you can look in the BIOS if there are some settings for that.

Hi there
Can't see any problem with HP and W8.1 drivers -- are you using the right site. Here's the UK one -- otherwise try USA - often has extra stuff but in some cases the model numbers aren't the same as Europe - but should be easy enough to decipher or find a near enough equivalent.

Windows 7 Upgrade to Windows 8 - Overview | HP® United Kingdom?

Personally I don't like Driver finder programs / registry scanners etc etc --often these programs are SNEAKERWARE - they sucker you in (DriverMax is a perfect example) to say we've got xxxx driver for you but then you have to PAY to use that part of the site.

Hardware drivers from site manufacturers like Lenovo, HP etc are in public domain and should be FREE in any case.

Cheers

I'm going though the same issue with my Fathers HP Laptop. HP only lists Windows 7 drivers for download for his model. I'd have to hunt around to find them if I need them. I may not even bother trying Windows 8 on it and just reinstall 7 for him.

There's not any problem with that website. I tried it a lot of times, and I always get the same reply: "We didn't try your laptop with Windows 8.1 and HP can't provide the drivers", or something like that... :(

It's just what happens to me... It's HP, we can't expect more from them. Anyway, Asus rock. They provide a laptop with all drivers for Win7, Win8 and Win8.1 both of x86 and x64 (my brother has one). It's amazing!

We have to settle with this...

I have an ASUS K75DE, ASUS lists drivers for Windows 7, 8.0 and 8.1 for it. My fathers HP is a few years old now and all they list is Windows 7 64 bit for the OS selection.

Hi there

perhaps that's why HP are now designated Hideous Products - a lot of once excellent manufacturers have either outsourced their stuff so customer service is HUGELY diminished or quality of product is poor too or usually both product AND service has gone down the tubes to horrible menu hell call centres etc etc..

The once legendary IBM Thinkpads have gone to Lenovo -- nothing like the same quality -- although they are beginning to improve slightly - but maybe it's too late, Dell is hopeless and HP are absolutely excruciatingly hideous.

The only computers I would get now (laptop wise) are either real CHEAPO ASUS / ACER brands --at least you know what you are buying or go the APPLE route.

Seems though generic drives as suggested by previous posters might do the trick -- another way is to look for a SIMILAR product on the HP web site and see if drivers for that work-- sometimes they do as drivers are written generally for a whole range of products rather than for a specific model. Trial and error is the way to do this.

Cheers
jimbo
