Screen went black after "Getting Devices Ready"

I had two failed installation attempts of Windows 8 CP. I want to dual boot with Windows 7.

Used this tutorial: Windows 8 VHD - Create at Boot to Dual Boot with

Both times I tried to install to an expanding VHD that I had created on my Windows 7 C:\

Installation runs as expected up to the Getting Devices Ready screen. Once it reaches 100% the screen goes black and it is totally unresponsive.

I wasn't going to bother trying again, but it's a new day and I don't want to give up so easily.

How can I troubleshoot what caused this to go wrong?

I am thinking of trying the installation again, although opting to create a new partition on disk 0 (only have one HDD). However it's really just hoping for the best... I would rather understand what went wrong with my previous attempts at installation. For example, is the problem with my Laptop, with my .iso, with my bootable DVD, with my devices, or with my HDD? I know other people have had similar black screen problems but none seem to have solutions yet.

Hmm, there might be a glitch with the expanding VHD with Windows 8 at the moment. I would just go the hard drive partition route if it was me. You'll need to boot from an external source of course, and you'll still be able to dual boot. I've done it and I can boot to Windows 7 if I must.

Thanks for the advice. When you say 'boot from an external source', do you mean run the setup from the bootable DVD I created from the iso? Then I can remove the DVD and boot my Laptop to reach the Windows 8 boot loader screen? I will try this method this week and report the results. Might help narrow down the problem.

Thanks that is a very interesting thread. Does seem like a video driver issue. However my installation fails completely. I cannot finish the Win8 installation. The first time I tried using my external monitor (HDMI), and the second time I tried without, but the installation failed at exactly the same place (except the second time I didn't reach Win8 boot loader. Instead it booted to the Win 8 Recovery Environment).

I guess if installing to a partition on the main disk fails, I can probably look more towards driver issues.

Thanks all, love the Windows Eight Forums!
