Last Fall I bought my wife a Dell All In One with Win8 installed. I seldom, if ever use it for I am sticking with 7 for now. She has Live Mail, Firefox installed and that is about it. No apps other than those that came with the machine.

Is it worth while upgrading to 8.1 and then 8.1Update?

If so, what is the simplest way to go about it?. Not necessarily the cheapest but the easiest.

Thank you very much.

Upgrading to 8.1 doesn't cost anything. To do the upgrade, you simply launch the app store and the option to upgrade to 8.1 is the first thing you'll see.

I agree with the replies above.

It's really a matter of choice but I think it is clear that 8.1 will continue to be improved whereas 8 will not other than security issues at least for the time being. If your wife is successfully navigating 8.0, 8.1 should not pose any problems.

As for the easiest way to update, I just had a thought. You might consider visiting a Dell Forum and try to find users with the same or very similar system as your wife's and see what the success rate is for the upgrade to 8.1. From what I have read it seems the success or failure rate of the upgrade to 8.1 seems to be somewhat related certain brands and even certain system configurations and definitely newer equipment seems to handle it better than older hardware. No, I have not tabulated any trends but it seems as though there are some commonalities.

If you do decide to upgrade make sure you have a backup plan in place. Have you made the recovery media after the system was purchased? Do you have the capability to create a backup system image? These things can be of great value if by some chance the upgrade causes serious problems. (not meant to scare you off but these things are just precautionary and 8.1 is literally a new operating system)

Considering the equipment your are talking about is very new with hardly any additional applications, the upgrade should go very smoothly and if there are any problems it's frequently just some drivers that need to be updated.
