Replacing Laptop HDD

I got an HP laptop last year pre-installed with Windows 8 and I want to install a new HDD. How do I go about doing this and not losing any files? So far all I know to do is to create a system disc from the recovery manager, and then a recovery file on an external drive. Does this cover personal files or do I need to back those up separately? If there's a step-by-step guide out there I'd greatly appreciate it if I could be pointed to it!

Thanks a lot! :thumb:

Make sure you BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP.

You can order the Microsoft official HP/Compaq OEM Recovery disks from the HP/Compaq OEM manufacturer's website.

Thanks a lot! I'm going to create backup discs for it then. After I do so and put in the new HDD, all I do is start-up the computer with a disc inside to reinstall it, correct? Will all my stuff be there aside from personal files and installed programs?

Hi there

Changing a Laptop HDD is usually easy - but BE CAREFUL with some HP laptops - there's a fiddly connector (easily broken) between the SATA connector on the HDD and the Laptop Mobo -- take a little picture of it with your phone camera BEFORE you start.

No prob if you remove the SATA connector -- CAREFULLY !!! and only remove the HDD end (the long connector on the HDD).

BTW you can COPY the image from the HDD to the new one before you remove the old HDD -- simply connect the new HDD to a USB port with the SATA ==> USB connector - you can get one for a few cents almost everywhere.

(screenshot enc of SATA==>Usb connector)

Then connect new HDD and it's DONE. !!!!

(Copy image with something like FREE MACRIUM (free) or ACRONIS(Paid product)

Cheers
