My computer seems to be rejecting Windows 8.1 free update?

Hi,

I'm not exactly a computer genius, and even Windows 8 is kind of new to me, but when they offered the update to 8.1 for free, of course I wanted it. When I update, everything seems to work fine until everything is complete, then it takes me to a flat blue screen that says nothing with no options to do anything. I've sat on that screen for an hour and a half. If I manually restart the computer, it automatically restores back to Windows 8. I've tried this three times.

Anyone have any idea?

The computer is an ASUS laptop and DOES have quite a bit of programs on there. It also has some adware or something that messes with my Mozilla browser that I somehow can't get rid of with even a rootkit, so if that problem has an easy fix I'd be up to hearing that answer, too. :D

Please help and thank you very much in advance.

No, I haven't. Where exactly do I look for that, if you don't mind me bothering you further?

We need for information to effectively help you in both areas:

First, what is the full make/model number of your laptop? Next, tell us what you have already done to try and address your malware issue? Also, please identify what you are using to protect your laptop (3rd-party AV, Windows Defender, MalwareBytes, etc.)?

A53SD-ES71 is the model number, it's an ASUS and the malware issue seems to only be in my browser. It continually changes my browser homepages back to a side called PortalDo, and before that it was a website called DO SEARCHES. It's nothing really that annoying but I still don't want it on my computer.

Right now it is apparently no longer protected, but I thought I had Avast. I must have ran into an issue, but I don't seem to recall.

Your drivers are here:

ASUS Service | North America

Please read the comments regarding the need to update the NVIDIA drivers. I would take the initiative to review those requirements manually to ensure you are running the latest. There are also several BIOS updates available.

Since your laptop is essentially unprotected at this point, I would focus more on cleaning that up before trying to update to Windows 8.1. Hopefully, you have made the manufacturer recovery discs so you can get a fresh start. If not, I would do a full scan with "something" to try and detect/isolate the malware. However, I will stop short of recommending a specific product because I have never been infected, so I am not the best source for making recommendations on "how to clean an infected laptop", so maybe someone else can assist you.
