Update from Windows 8 to First Windows 8.1

Okay, I purchased my HP Pavilion 17 laptop in December with windows 8. Needless to say this version is very confusing compared to my beloved Windows XP which I used from 2001 or 02. It's been somewhat confusing learning windows 8. Question...is it really necessary to upgrade to 8.1 and 8.1.1?? I've read lots of negative comments about 8.1 and have read several problems with the installation of the newest version. To be quite honest I'm very apprehensive about installing this version. If I were to install them, is there a step-by-step instruction doc that can be printed?

If it's really necessary to install, I'll probably have some questions that I couldn't find answers to and hope that I wouldn't have too many that would drive anyone of you crazy. I'm also a senior citizen which could make it even worse.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to EF m'am....

IMHO, XP will probably last you a while longer... there are security flaws that will not be fixed in the future (very acute ones in exceptional circumstances for the most part - so not to worry), but with conscientious browsing/email scanning and proper malware security programs, you should not have any problems with it.

    Hello Juliet,

I'm afraid so. You'll need to update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 first. Doing so from the Store would be the easiest way.
Afterwards, you would just keep checking and installing all of your Windows Updates to eventually update to Windows 8.1 Update.
    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

Shawn, I was afraid that I would have to go from Windows 8 to 8.1. I'll take a look at the links your provided and might have questions. Thank you for the links. Oh, and thank you for being a nice alien

Oh, I assumed you may have the XP installation media... but as Brink says ...you are required to update now as each Windows 8 release has a much shorter support cycle now.

    Best of luck.

Well you're not really required to do it immediately. You could do it next year if this gives you some planning time.

True, but if one has to use Windows 8, why not update now?.... the latest version is far superior.

I did and I agree- just saying it is (for the next couple of years) optional.
