I don't want to start the actual upgrading, I just want to see results of checking my computer.

    Thanks
That's a good thing to do, it's not 100% sure but it's a good start. There's one expressly for 8.1. Also check in advance if your drivers are up to date before upgrading, Maybe you should also make a complete system backup beforehand or at least important data.
Thanks for the info. I check my HP Support Assistant practically every day to see if there are any updates, HP and Microsoft, and install that same day. So, I'm pretty sure my drivers are up to date. I'll be sure to check right before I start the upgrade as well.
I already did my Recovery DVD's if that's what you're referring to.....that was fun to do. However, can you tell me the correct name of the program that I should use to back up files as well as the other stuff that wasn't included in the Recovery discs? And, should I disable/remove or whatever my Norton 360 program before updating?

    Thanks.

Sorry, that should have been step 13 in Option Four instead. I missed updating this when I updated the other tutorial.
Shawn, I have the complete instructions now but I have a question(s) that hopefully I can post tomorrow.

Sure, Juliet. However, if your computer came with Windows 8 on it, you're probably good to go. Never hurts to confirm things, though.

BTW, when I upgraded my Windows 8 laptop to Windows 8.1 on April 8 (could have been April 9), I got the whole shebang! Lappy now has Windows 8.1 Update and is very proud of herself, since she was one of the first to get the latest and greatest!
Thanks for the info. Your comment re your lappy being proud of herself.......had me doing thistwice!
HaHa, wait until you hear from StarFerret . . . she's a riot.

BTW, as you probably know by now, this is one of the greatest bunches of folks around. They just fall all over each other trying to help us. As well as giving help, I've had as much and more help given to me.

Hi everyone! I want to thank all of you on this thread for your expert help so I could update to 8.1. If I didn't have your help, it never would have been updated. This website is the best one I've been on. You are definitely a great bunch and so very helpful.

I did have some problems with the upgrade, but had nothing to do with this group. It was all about an error code that I received during the installation, but eventually it was corrected. My son was here during the upgrade, after he took me out to lunch for my birthday. He could not believe the steps that had to be taken to make sure my laptop was okay for the update. He had it done on his HP desktop without any advanced steps and had no problems whatsoever.

The support person at Microsoft said I need to purchase an optimizer for my laptop for just $200.00! Well, that hasn't happened yet...need to get the money first. Plus, I'm not even sure what this program does.

Again, thanks for your much needed help.

    Lynn

    Great news Lynn.

Forget the optimizer. Most are snake oil, and certainly not worth $200. I can't believe that they would recommend something so expensive.

If you like, you can pick and choose from the list in the tutorial below to help optimize Windows 8/8.1 for free.

What kind of optimizer does MS have for 200 bucks ? I don't believe I heard of something like that.
