I do believe the Store Upgrade to 8.1 now includes update 1. That will save the second step of hitting Windows update for update 1. It might also reduce the chances of something going wrong in the process.

The improvements in 8.1 and 8.1 Update 1 are worth doing. You will find it a lot easier to use as they have refined the Start Button and Start Screen.

Shawn, unless you recommend another method, I'm going to use Option One, Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via Window Store. Also, is the Microsoft Upgrade Assistant only used for upgrading or does it serve any other purpose.? I have a few more questions but too tired to list....I'm exhausted from reading all that info. Unbelievable that you have to go thru all that stuff (I had another word for it) to update windows 8.

    Again, thanks for your help.

You're welcome. Option One would be the easiest way to do so.

One thing I do before upgrading to 8.1 is to make sure there are newest, compatible drivers installed, the system is in tip-top shape with no ongoing issues. "Killing" third party programs in Startup and at least temporarily suspending third party AV is also good idea.
Also heard of problems with some start menu customizers.

Yes agreed, this method proved very smooth except that I needed to install my programs and transferring my Docs, Pics and Vids etc.
This update showed me how important a "Backup" is and mainly in a OEM laptop.

Shawn, I don't see a step 13 in Option 3 of the article "How to upgrade from Windows 8, windows 7, vista, or XP to windows 8 or 8.1" as you stated in the instructions for Option One-Upgrade to winows 8.1 via Window Store" in step 11.

I read to check the drivers as well and I think it includes instructions to do so. I have no idea what 3rd party programs and 3rd party AVs are. Can you explain, please.

Third party programs like Start 8, or other customizing programs that change default settings.
Third party antivirus programs that stay resident, other than Windows Defender ( Avast, AVG Norton, Kasperski etc).
