    Windows 8.1 Update 1 (KB2919355) installation FAILS

    Hi!

I have tried updating my Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit, upgraded from Windows 8 Pro) with the new "Update 1" (KB2919355) but it always fails with ERROR code 8007005 (or 80073712).

What I have tried do to fix:

    • Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic (that e.g. removes files from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and cleans Windows update history metadata info)
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    • DISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

After all of this, still the update (KB2919355) fails

There must be something that Microsoft needs to fix, there are xxxxxxxxxxxx amount of similar complains and reports out there...

    Keep trying.

Sometimes I have to hit the Retry button several times.

Hmmm... did that happen to you with this Update 1 too (= you hit hard a few times)?

Have tried a few times already...

    Not with the 5 or 6 small updates before the big 8.1 update {800 or so MBs}, but with the 2 new updates {KB2933809 & KB2957390}

I had to try 4 times before the 2 new updates downloaded & installed.

I've tried 6 times now - and had MS Tech Support try to help me - before finally restoring back to Macrium Reflect image prior to Windows Update Tuesday. Just sitting back and waiting for MS to fix the problem now - checking the forums and blogs regularly. Hopefully MS will wake up soon.

It's only been a few days. It's not like MS has had months to work out the kinks.

The last big package (KB2919355) manual installation progresses with the Progress Bar to "100%" completion, at least seems so, and then informs "Installation failed."...

    So no solution exists.

I signed up here after finding this thread when Googling for a solution to my problem. I'm also getting the errors when trying to install KB2919355, both manually and through Windows Update. Never really been an expert on updates, so do we just have to wait for Microsoft to fix this?

Here are a couple of threads at Microsoft - both long, but is shows you are not alone

KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and - Microsoft Community

Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install with errors 80070020, 80073712 - Microsoft Community

Note particularly at the bottom of Page 19 of the first one, "I also managed to install the update in 2 offline VMs (one 32 Bit and the other 64 Bit) and one offline system which had only installation with the Windows 8.1 .iso and the generic product key. These had the following installed:
    64 Bit

    32 Bit

    There were no issues.

And my reply just below that: "THANK YOU! Just as you posted this, the MS Tech Rep also sent it to me via email. I tried it once and it didn't work. Then, in the back of my mind, i remembered somewhere I had read that enabling all Services under msconfig helps also. So, I took your information enabled all Services in msconfig - and Wallah it worked! Thank so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I had just about given up - succeeded on my 7th try.

Good luck - I was so frustrated I almost gave up....but on the 7th try it worked.

    Windows 8.1 64 bit

I had the failure message with unhelpful Error Code 80072EE2.
I don't know if the upgrade actually did fail, as there was a new green/white Metro Store icon on the taskbar.
The changes are so minimal it is hard to tell.

    All the other upgrades succeeded.

I ran the WindowsUpdate diagnostic which did not help but all my update history is now gone.

    I uninstalled update KB 2919355.

I downloaded a standalone version of KB 2919355.

I read that some had achieved success with services running. I have had a printer spooler service, since the 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade, that can only be started manually. I started this manually and ran the standalone upgrade. Quite slow but it completed, then configured itself during the reboot.

Anyrate, the upgrade has now worked.

The EU should take a class action out against Microsoft for the countless wasted hours its citizens face with upgrades they do not want and that do not work properly.
