I've had the same issue, but I recently found both the cause of this problem and it's solution to be the Windows Media Center. Do you also have the Windows Media Center installed on your system with windows 8.1? If so, there seems to be some sort of conflict the that particular update and the Windows Media Center being present during the installation of the update.

The solution, as of right now, is to re-install your previous Windows OS and migrate back to Windows 8.1 without reinstalling the Windows Media Center. Microsoft is aware of issue and are working towards developing a patch to fix the problem, but how long that may actually take is anyone's guess.

This Windows 8.1 update 1 is mandatory. Anyone currently running Windows 8.1 who does not accept the update will not have access to future Microsoft Update Service updates after May 2014.

Have tried a few times already...
    Not with the 5 or 6 small updates before the big 8.1 update {800 or so MBs}, but with the 2 new updates {KB2933809 & KB2957390}

I had to try 4 times before the 2 new updates downloaded & installed.
I've tried 6 times now - and had MS Tech Support try to help me - before finally restoring back to Macrium Reflect image prior to Windows Update Tuesday. Just sitting back and waiting for MS to fix the problem now - checking the forums and blogs regularly. Hopefully MS will wake up soon.

May I ask. Do you have the Windows Media Center currently installed on you Windows 8.1 system?

I mailed (as proposed in MSFT forum) to Microsoft for them to raise an official ticket. I am sure they will evantually fix this. I am tired trying "hacks" and using my time for "trial and error"...

I made a Video to help people through this. It was the link earlier posted that helped me make this video.

    Hi MKeezy,

I would love to view your sources on this, as I did have Windows 8.1 Pro/Media Center, prior to successfully installing KB2919355....however even with this 'successful installation'...I am having issues. Please see this post/thread:

KB2919355 breaks down logon screen and lock screen Post #7 Post #8

At least in my case 'it is more of a cosmetic, very annoying issue, but it can be rectified by simply pressing the Windows Logo key, at which point, the Metro apps having the issue (thus far-Metro Mail, Metro IE11) will properly return to the Metro Start screen..)
I would love to post your 'Media Center causing conflicts with Windows 8.1 Update' info on my threads posted up @Microsoft 8.1 forums and MS TechNet Windows 8.1 forums...

    Thanks kindly

I decided to give "dism" tool one more chanse yesterday evening and it worked, so I'd guess MSFT has done some changes somewhere... Just read this postings and there are several "success" posts with all the same instructions (which I did too, again, and succeeded).

Solved, but MSFT has to figure out the root cause still!

Still no luck on my end--using the DISM cleanup command just gives me error 14098. Installing by Windows Update and by standalone still gives me an error. Also, trying to remove the update just tells me it doesn't exist.

Try using command prompt to uninstall each one of the update packages that also installs with the KB291935 update. Open you system Command Prompt evoking administrative privilege. The command should look something like the following inside of the brackets: [wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:2919355]

Repeat the process for any of the other four or five updates that are associated with the kb9219355 update package.

I'm having problems with this update, as well. After installing it, the whole windows 8 interface (start button, start screen, metro side bar, etc.) stopped working and I can only operate with the desktop.

I restored my computer to a point before this whole thing happened, but I still can't use the windows 8 interface. And I know KB 2919355 isn't installed, because windows update is asking me to install it right now.

Did they figure out a solution for this yet?

Microsoft sure knows how to disappoint their fanbase.
