There is nothing stopping you from doing both. If upgrading though add features doesn't fix that error message you could always then do a clean install. Make your image first anyway. Add Features won't prompt for install media etc. All the files are already on your system for the added features. You enter your code and the extra features are installed/enabled. That is assuming it excepts your code. It may not. If it doesn't your decision is made for you.

To upgrade Windows 8 core, you need to use the Pro Pack.

    To upgrade to Pro Pack
    No install files needed.
Only the Upgrade key is need.

    Add Features to Windows 8
    or
use the Windows 8 Pro OEM/Retail full version.

    @ Wynona:
Can you post a screenshot of your Disk Management, I'm just curious what you should be careful of doing a clean install?

I'm thinking the clean install will re-create the necessities. I hope theog floats by and lends his invaluable insight on this. I'm not totally up to snuff on the UEFI/OEM thing!
I'm sure you'll make out okay though, hang in there!

As you are Upgrading from Windows 8/8.1 Core to Pro, you can do a Custom Clean install with the Windows 8/8.1 Pro DVD.
    or
Clean Install with OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disk, then Upgrade to Pro.

Ok, the reason I asked is I wanted to know what the embedded key was for 8.0 or 8.1. Your 8.1 install media will ignore it and prompt for a key. If it had been an 8.1 embedded key Core would be installed automatically without you getting a chance to enter a key.
