    Help on reinstalling Windows 8

    Hi,

I have a Windows laptop that came with originally windows 8, but then I had a friend put a copy of Windows 7 on. It worked pretty well but now I'd like to switch back to Windows 8. Am I able to do that?

    Thanks
    Brad

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

    information   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8
System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8 (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.
    or
You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

if your backup partition is still intact on your laptop you possibly can, otherwise its a trip to the store for a new purchase of windows 8.
Do you know what he did? Did he wipe the partitions?

Please go to your profile page and fill in your specs so we know what we are dealing with. Exact laptop model?

(Sorry above, didnt see you post)

The recovery disk you create as soon as you buy your new laptop right? I don't believe I did. Does that mean I need to get a recovery disk from Gateway?

    Gateway Store: eRecovery CD

How can I check if he wiped the partitions? I know what a partition is and I checked the status of my HDD under computer management but I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I've updated my specs too. Its a Gateway NE45R34u

YES, not bad for $20. Some OEM manufacturer's Recovery disks are a lot higher.

Gateway Website Link: Using Recovery Management outside of Windows

    The Gospil according to gateway

    1. Restart the computer.
    2. When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the left Alt, and the F10 keys.
    3. If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
    4. After the Acer eRecovery Management application has loaded, select your restore type.
    5. Read the notice, and then click Next when you are ready.
    6. Click Next to begin the restore process. The restore can take anywhere from 10 minutes up to an hour.
    7. Once the restore is complete your computer will load Windows and start installing your drivers and software. Your computer may reboot several times during this process. After everything is complete your computer will be like it was when you first purchased it.

If the steps above do not work, you will need to use recovery media to restore your system. If you do not have a set of Acer Recovery Media, you may purchase a set online.

Use this to see your partitions. Data recovery, partition management and disk utilities - PartitionGuru Free

If you have a recovery partition, you can probably make use of the install.wim or install.swm on there.

Use this to create winpe boot media from your existing system:

X64,OEM Core/Home. DELL Inspiron 660 - tried doing a Clean install, using the Generic keys that are floating on the Net. It did NOT work, won't take in any Generic keys Core: 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT that I tossed in?
End up installing windows 8.0 and Upgrade from there, NOT sure why those keys do NOT work anymore?

You could have just made a text file, like this:

    [EditionID]
    Core

    [Channel]
    Retail

Save it as ei.cfg, put it in the "sources" folder of the win8.1 install usb. It won't ask for a key. The key ( or the ei.cfg ) are just to tell it which edition to install.
