WTF??? One of the best features of Vista and Win 7, so they HIDE it away? I do an image every month or two, and whenever I make changes/additions. Haven't had to do a re-install since Feb 2009, I just restore from the latest image.

If you search for 'Shows Desktop.lnk'- there are several - then copy the link to:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It will add the option back to Metro. Just go to Start/Search Desktop then add it. This also applies to other missing options, such as Store.

However, as johnpombrio mentioned, some of the shortcuts are stored in

    C:\Users\{User Name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Application Shortcuts

    Microsoft.BingMaps_8wekyb3d8bbwe
    Microsoft.BingWeather_8wekyb3d8bbwe
    Microsoft.Camera_8wekyb3d8bbwe

    etc.

Yes the shortcuts are there unless I delete them, heh. It turns out that I managed to delete enough of the core Metro apps that the "More PC Settings" in the Charms Bar no longer worked. I was curious about the Win8 "Recovery" mode so I tried it out. It worked pretty good but uninstalled all of my programs that I had installed (just like a fresh install). The curious thing was that the recovery made a folder "image" of my hard drive called Windows.old. Mind you, the folder was huge as it had all of my original data in it. Unfortunately, just copying the folder fro the program back into the "new" Programs folder did not work and so I have been reinstalling everything I just finished installing. Recovery works, just make sure you have enough disk space.

I suppose the thinking goes. Who backs up a phone or a tablet?

Could be that they hope to have most people use Metro apps, which are kept after doing a refresh, so back ups won't be too much of a problem. And they hope people will use Skydrive for Documents and Pictures.

I love Windows 8, except of two things. Start menu changed to a fullscreen tablet friendly interface and also the tablet friendly interface. It's great for tablets. Not so great for desktops. I have Start8 to get back the old start menu, but I just want to Disable Metro now. Other than that,...
There is a great deal of discussion here that, to me, is based on basic preferences for using "metro" over the desktop or vice versa. Personally, I am very interested in knowing more about the related strength-classes into which your preferences fall. In this regard, I know that the desktop might...
