Can't access DVD to install W8 over XP.

HI Guys, I am trying to install the W8 DVD over the current XP OS, but in MyComputer, the DVD Drive isn't listed in the tree view. Device manager says it's installed properly and functioning well. My Q is this: how do I run the installation DVD from the DVD drive using the Command Prompt. On Windows Start-up I hit F12 to access the boot order, and when I arrowed down to the DVD drive and hit ENTER, Windows would just jump straight to the XP start-up process. It's like something won't let me access the DVD Drive. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers all.

You can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7, you need to do a full install. Boot the CD, don't try to start it from a booted XP.

HI Ztroker, the DVD is a full Windows8 install, not an upgrade. I'd love to boot straight from the DVD Drive but I can't access it from MyComputer because it's not showing there.

Boot to BIOS Setup. Set the DVD drive as the first boot device then boot with the DVD in the drive, see if that start install. If not, does your computer have a one time boot option, usually F12 but may be a different key? If so, use that to boot the DVD.

I see you already tried this. Does the DVD show up in BIOS Setup? If so, are you sure the DVD is good? Try booting it in another computer just to test it out.

    Hi lostindigital,

If you are trying to upgrade from xp to windows 7, then I have no advice to offer you as ztrucker has already responded to that issue; however, if you are trying to do a clean install and your DVD drive is not recognizing a valid installation disc as bootable, I would check the following:

First, it would be nice to review your system specs because I'm guessing you have a fairly old rig. FYI, I also encountered a similar issue in my xp days (my rig would ignore my dvd boot disc and proceed to boot into win xp) and I found out this was ocurring because I had my CD player and DVD player daisey-chained together and only the CD player was being recognized as bootable. So, I simply swapped their position in the daisey-chain and then I could boot from my DVD player (instead of my CD player). Probably not your issue but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

I am quite sure other suggestions will follow so good luck if neither of our suggestions work (or do not apply to your situation).

    Best regards,

Let me look at it again tonight as I'm not in front of it right now. F12 gave me the boot order but I wasn't able to select the DVD option. I then accessed the BIOS menu but wasn't able to see where I can select the DVD options. I'll read the motherboard booklet tonight to try and find an answer there. Many thanks though.

Thanks My2cents, that's very interesting. Appreciate that feedback. I'll post up the PC specs here tonight when I get home. Cheers.

    Hi again lostindigital,

It seems like your second response differs from your first where I (originally) thought you could select the DVD drive as a boot device so I'm not sure if my original response has any merit behind it right now. At this point, I'm not sure why it would be detected by your BIOS, appear as a boot option, and not work unless either the optical reader is dirty and/or the installation disc is defective (both of which have already been suggested by ztrucker). Anyway, check things out and update us as you can.

    Just a few more questions:

Did your DVD drive ever appear in your OS?
If so, when did it stop working?
    If not, is it new?

    Also:

Is this a retail disc or an ISO you made yourself?
If self made, did you make it bootable?

    One more thing:

Any chance you are getting a visual prompt to "press any key to continue booting" and you are missing that?

I'm just trying to give you as much food for thought as I can think of until your next response.

Hi, I just bought the Win8 DVD last week. I'll convert it to an ISO tonight and install it via a USB instead. I've just downloaded the tools I need so that seems a simple option. The PC is a little old and I am not sure if the DVD ever showed up on the OS. It's not actually my PC. It's one of my father's office PCs that we're attempting to upgrade.
