Windows will not allow me to download 8.1 using Admin acct

    That may have something to do with it. Store Apps don't work when logged in with a local account, although I thought Microsoft waived that restriction for the 8.1 Store update.

    OK, that's good to hear. I was going over what was listed in the link I posted but it didn't really tell me much one way or the other. I was about to hunt up some old threads on the subject but it looks like I won't have to do that now.

    I know this has already been solved but...

    My mom got here laptop in October and I told her that the 8.1 update will have better security (It does) At the time, she did not have a Live ID and was using a Local. She could still install the update but then she told me she wanted a few apps like Iheartradio and The Weather Channel. I told her she needed a Live ID. You do NOT need a Live ID to get the 8.1 update.
