Clone from SSD to HDD

Hi,

I am hoping someone can give me some advice.

I recently bought a new laptop and I want to take the SSD from my old laptop and put it in my new one. Normally not a problem but I have a lot on my SSD that I still want to be able to use on the old laptop so I was trying to clone it so I could still use things like Office 2010. I have tried various cloning programmes including Clonezilla but none of them worked. The latest I used was EaseUS and it seems to have cloned the drive and partitions ok. But I put the HDD I used as the destination into my old laptop and it will not boot up. Does anyone know, would this be because of drivers etc associated with the SSD?

My next thought is a clean install of windows 8.1 onto the HDD and then using the recovery image I made recently. But I am a bit worried about that, because if the SSD drivers do cause a problem it wont work and will waste my time.

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how I would go about solving this wee problem of mine.

Thanks :D

Your OEM manufacturer's Windows 8 install must stay with the new Notebook.

I think they are trying to clone the ssd from the old laptop to a hard drive so they can run the old laptop from the hard drive.

Sorry if I was not clear. I am terrible at explaining myself haha.

Basically I want everything from my SSD in my old laptop, put onto a HDD that would then be used in my old laptop. But the cloned copies I made never worked, tried to repair it through the advanced recovery settings but I gave up after the same screen for an hour haha.

Now trying the repair with an image I took yesterday with Windows own recovery centre. Half way through the re-imaging of the HDD. Time will tell if it will work or not.

Hope I was a bit clearer this time :)

That sounds better.

How to clone your SSD drive to a SATA drive.

The old Notebook would need to have a UEFI/BIOS firmware, for that.

Just out of curiosity why would a UEFI/BIOS firmware be needed. I can switch between a SSD and a hard drive on my desktop computer and all I have is a BIOS.

All new Notebook are install in UEFI mode, which will not boot on a BIOS firmware.

That's good to know for future reference. I thought they were swapping the SSD from an old laptop with a hard drive.

Little update for everyone haha.

Well, the image I had from yesterday (which was taken when windows 8.1 was installed on an SSD) installed onto the HDD with no issues. Boot up was quite slow though (I realise it would be slower on a HDD, but seemed too slow).

So I extended the partitions to make use of the extra space on the HDD (from 256GB SSD to 500GB HDD) and then I went to perform a defrag but it says in the disk description that it is still an SSD and it won't allow me to perform a defrag.

I tried updating the drivers but that did not change anything. The one bit of help I could find online was that they had the same problem (showing it is an SSD when it is in fact an HDD) and that they ran the windows performance indicator test and that fixed it. This is not a viable option for me as Windows 8 no longer has that facility.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can get windows 8 to recognise it is on an HDD?

Thanks

You probably changed to AHCI when you installed SSD, maybe if you change it back it would be recognized as HDD. It does nothing to HDD's performance anyway.

I ended up doing a clean install. Kept Office 2010 on laptop by using a program to find product key and then reinstalled that way. Could have saved myself 2 days worth of hassle if I had just done that in the first place haha.

Thanks to all that replied, appreciate your comments.
