Solved Win 8.1 Repair

when I upgraded to Win 8.1 it was online. I have a win 8 disk but its not recognised. How can I reinstall win 8.1 and not lose anything as it reports missing files.

My daughter plugged in her ipad which normally opened in a setting which no longer works, instead opening in windows which it should not. I opened a file this morning and it opened in the wrong directory??

What license did you have initially? Depending what it was you can download 8.1 from MS.

Is this a OEM manufacturer's PC with Pre-installed Windows 8?

I bought win 8 and have the disks and code. But upgraded to Win 8.1 online via MS, it auto installed but did not save a copy in the pc. I am going to check that link now

You can not use the key extracted from the UEFI/BIOS firmware or a OEM key to download the Windows 8.1 ISO, you can only use the key to ACTIVATE.

The generic keys can only be used to install Windows 8.1 & not ACTIVATE or to download the Windows 8.1 ISO .

The initial panic is I think, over. My daughter reinastalled all the itunes and ipod software and we 'think' its fixed. BUT, I still want a copy of win 8.1 for future possibilites.

I am going to mark this as solved because my problem now is different, I want a back up of my win 8.1 upgrade, so will be contacting MS UK as soon as I can find a human

See theog post #5. That is what you want to do. I also downloaded 8.1 ISO with Win 8 key and it works fine.

understood adam but I dont want to install it, its already in. I just want to download it and move it to a back up, docked, HDD, for safe keeping.
