HDD to SSD transfer, but computer is now slow

The computer I am using is a Dell Inspiron M5040 laptop.

I got a Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD to replace my HDD, and used the Samsung Software that came with it to image my OS over to the SSD. It had an error at first, so I removed my antivirus program and ran it again, and it worked.

Everything works pretty much the same, except for noticeable differences in search and Internet webpage access.

If I search in Explorer, the searches are fast and prompt. But if I search with the regular search charm ( WIN+S ), searches are more than 7x slower than on the previous HDD. Also, webpages a quick to load on different computers (not the internet speed, in other words). But this computer had slow loads, and now the loading is even slower on the new SSD.

Things I've tried:
Multiple SFC scans - all say there is some files that could not be fixed
All windows updates installed
enabled Trimm, updated SSD firmware, ran Windows SSD optimization, optimized computer for SSD use
Reset Internet Explorer
Rebuilt index

Any further help much appreciated. I'm thinking of ditching this slower laptop in favor of something... anything nearby. Regretting either imaging to another drive, or using Samsung to do it.

Well, apparently the power options still reflected 'balanced' despite my attempted change, so I changed it to high performance through the group policy editor. It is a big improvement, but still it is about twice as slow as previously (much better than 7x). It is workable though, I guess. Let me know if anyone has a suggestion. I am using it a whole lot less, and have moved all its files to a server. I still access them through this computer, however.

I've never done an HD to SSD so make sure your starting offset are correctly set for the new SSD or it will not run at optimum. This works for Windows 8.x too!

Check your SSD Partition Alignment

Here's mine for example:

^ Neat feature. But yes, it returns a whole number. I had the Samsung program do all of that automatically, as the transfer software came with the SSD.

Hi again DustSailor,

I guess I should have read your thorough explanation in more detail but I did notice you upgraded your firmware. Now, did you do that before or after the software transition? The reason I asked is because I have seen many issues arise when someone tries to do an SSD firmware update after installation. If you did it after, are you sure the manufacturer said it was OK to do it that way?

Hey mate,

I did do it after. It was a 'do at your own risk' type deal, but seemed successful. However, the reason I did do it to begin with was that the system was slow (before the firmware update). So there was no adverse reaction to the firmware update that I could tell.

Yes, but if you had done the firmware update before the installation, that might have fixed issues that are now causing your slowness. Please understand I am not trying to explain why it might be necessary to do it beforehand. The only thing I can tell you is that it is a best practice and recommended (or required) by many SSD manufacturers. Now, on to the slowness, the Samsung 840 Pro series is the top-of-the-line IMHO and includes many features that other SSDs lack. Moreover, if you go to the Passmark website, the Samsung 840 SSDs are the top performers. With that said, would you be willing to do a benchmark test (using ATTO) and post the results? Here's mine for comparison:

Note that my SSD meets the manufacturer's stated requirements on large block transfers:

You can download ATTO here and give it a whirl if you like:

Sorry mate,

I got the test here (quicker than I thought it would take...)

If you are running at SATA III, then something is definitely wrong; however, even if you are running at SATA II, then its still no good IMHO. Here is my same drive model (I have two of the same), running at SATA II speed, in a USB 3.0 docking station:

Image Backup Drive.jpg

You speeds are way too low for that SSD (even at SATA II) for that premium drive. I'd either rethink my firmware update strategy or take it back for a new drive. Just my opinion. Good luck with your own decision.

It more than likely is SATAII, something which I didn't even think about before updating. Thanks for pointing things out for me though, it has helped. Take care [DEL](Rep giving must not be a strong point for me, I still need to 'spread some around'...)[/DEL]
