Does anyone know if I could install Win 8.1 (none pro) by using a Win 8.1 Pro ISO ?
I read somewhere that the product key would determine which version would be installed.
I need to install the none pro version but do not have that Iso. Thanks for any help.

I have the Iso that I downloaded as talked about here on this forum where you download Win 8 and stop and then download the Win 8.1 Iso. I hope this is clear enough. Thanks.

Won't work with a 8.1 Pro .iso, only the dvd-rom. I made a 8.1 Pro iso on my 8.1 Pro pc and tried it on my 8.0 laptop , which had Windows 8 and it installed 8.1 Pro, instead of 8.1.

Thanks for the quick reply. Well, I'll try to download the none pro Iso and go from there.

You will need a Retail Windows 8/8.1 CORE product key.

Thanks theog

My copy is OEM so maybe with a new core download , I can go that way.

You ned to buy a Retail CORE Product key.
or
Use the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

That download is version specific. If you use a Pro key you get a Pro image, and a Core key gets you a Core image. The Pro image will not let you install Core and vise versa. OEM installs are often 8 Core but that download won't accept OEM keys, they have to be Retail codes. Retail DVD's are multi edition and as you surmised and the key determines what version gets installed.

O.E> you're s.o.o.l. on your laptop, just like I am on mine. I'm eventually going to upgrade mine from 8.1 to 8.1 Pro down the road and I may just try to figure out how to buy a 8.1 Prp O.E.M. version from Newewgg, just to have the 2nd Pro key, so I can do a clean 8.1 Pro install on the laptop, anytime I want. Just like I do on my desktop every 3-4 month's. I like my hdd's and ssd's as clean as possible and Windows/pc as fast as possible at at all time's.

Well, Let me see about this. I have a home made computer which has an OEM Win8 core copy which I bought from Newegg and later changed over to Win 8.1 from the Windows
store. So I want a restore Iso for this computer. I thought I would use a different HDD on this computer and use this OEM copy to install Win 8 again. Then go back through the process to get a Win 8.1 core Iso. Can this route work? Thank to all of you.

You need to buy a Retail CORE Product key to download the Windows 8.1 ISO, not the OEM.

When I did this before for the Win 8.1 Pro Iso, I used a generic key for the download.
Wouldn't that work again. Thanks.

The generic keys can only be used to install Windows 8.1 & not ACTIVATE or to download the Windows 8.1 ISO .
