Windows 8 CP stuck on Beta Fish screen

  1. #21

Trying it now. I just built this machine and really liked the look of Win 8. It was working fine until I loaded utility drivers for my sound card. Upon reboot, it stuck at the fish screen. Pressing F8 did not work.

Make sure Legacy Support, Legacy Keyboard Support or similar is enabled in the bios settings and save.

Also make sure your keyboard is plugged into the motherboard and not some add-on card or USB hub.

Once you get to safe mode (if you do) - uninstall the audio software you installed. Then reboot to get to normal mode and let us know. From there on, it will be no problem finding the correct driver to install.

Legacy support enabled, keyboard plugged into motherboard directly. Still freezes at fish.

Sure, of course that....but my previous post was intended to try to help you use F8 to get to safe mode + networking.

I dunno....maybe someone that knows can say...if you can get to safe mode, then we're golden here. The object is to get there. Everything else is easy.

There's probably a way to use the Win8 installer DVD or USB to get there otherwise, but don't quote me on that.

This page claims to "mash on shift + F8":

"The trick is to hold the Shift button and mash the F8 key, this will sometimes boot you into the new advanced “recovery mode”, where you can choose to see advanced repair options."

I will try holding the shift down while pressing F8 repeatedly. Thanks for the suggestion. Does 8 run for you?

Holding the shift key down while repeatedly pushing the F8 keys does not work either. Is there no way I can disable it from the BIOS?

If you're unable to get to the recovery options via F8, you can boot from your Windows 8 DVD. After the Initial Welcome screen , you'll get the option to Install. In the bottom left of this screen you'll see the option to Repair, select this. After that:

    1. Select Troubleshoot

You have two choices at this point, you can choose:

    2. Refresh Your PC
    Or
    3. Advanced Options

The first choice (Refresh) may well be enough to get you back to a working system, however, if this doesn't work, the Advanced Options followed by Automatic Repair may be needed.

    See how it goes.

Thanks, but I have tried the refresh, reset, and repair options. I even tried to reinstall and just ended up with two copies of 8 installed!

Here is the explanation on the whys and hows of safe mode. You should be able to get to safe mode + networking after checking on it:

Good job Brink. Now at least I know why people can not easily get to safe mode when 8 is the only OS.

One thing not mentioned in the tutorial is the use of F10 instead of F8. This may succeed to bring up the Boot Options Editor with the next command to be processed (the one that is failing) showing.

It is discussed here (Win7), without a solution: Won't boot unless I use "EDIT BOOT OPTIONS (F10)" at boot screen - Windows 7 Forums

    and here in detail:

Edit Boot Options in Windows Vista

The safest thing would be to erase the current command and replace it with

    /SAFEBOOT:NETWORK

to bring up safe mode with networking or

    /SAFEBOOT:MINIMAL

    for safe mode

To get a copy of the BCD boot options file first run an elevated command prompt: I normally right click the desktop and create a shortcut and type
    cmd
<enter> <enter> to create the shortcut

    right-click the shortcut and select

    run as administrator

then in the console, type the following:

    BCDEDIT > c:\BCD.txt

    <enter>

    Notepad c:\BCD.txt

<enter> to bring the file up in notepad. You can post or copy the file here as well for us to see.

The BCD is presumably corrupt, and may need to be rewritten:

    BCDBOOT c:\WINDOWS /s C:
    <enter>
should create the boot files on the c: drive

    shutdown -r -o -t 0
<enter> should restart your machine with a boot options menu
