How to install after using killdisc?

    Hi

My PC got into a loop where it kept trying to install Win8, crashing and trying again.

Somebody advised using killdisc to wipe clean, however, I can't boot from the Win8 disc to install because hard drive is not found.

What steps do I need to follow in order to get it running again?

Booting to install media is not dependent on a hard drive. You don't even need a hard drive in the system to boot.

Check your motherboard manual. 2 ways. One is to set it permanently to boot to CD/DVD drive first and the other way is to access a temporary boot menu while powering on the machine.

Keys to access bios, bios settings and one-time boot menu are different on all systems.

I would assume killdisk pretty much wiped the drive and removed the basic configuration information needed for it to be used. So you may have to initialize it again and possibly the following process could help. Hopefully you can boot to the Install Media.

When you boot to the install media, on the first page, hit Shift+F10 to open a command prompt. Once it is open, start Diskpart and check the drive. Use the disk number of the correct drive shown from the lis dis command.

    Diskpart
    lis dis
    sel dis 0
    det dis

These commands might be useful after your select the correct drive.

    online
    or perhaps this one
convert mbr (or gpt if UEFI)

If this doesn't work, perhaps someone else will know a better way to initialize the drive.

I'm fairly sure that Windows installer initializes a drive, but it has been a real long time since I installed to a new (or zeroed out) drive. About 90% sure I'd say, which does mean I could be wrong.

Actually, it was a problem with the Win7 disc. I stuck a Win8.1 disc in and it's installing right now.

    Thanks for your responses.
