Hi all,
I installed windows 8 to my machine. it has intel hd graphics. I can install it fine but once i try boot Windows 8 the screen goes black (screen is actually off). I can get it to work by plugging in a HDMI cable into thee hdmi slot and use a monitor. it works perfect like that but my laptop screen stays black. It must be the graphics driver. I tried updating the graphics driver and that didnt work. I then tried installing the driver from the dell site for Windows 7 and that didnt work.Any ideas?

How do you do this when the screen is black and you can't see anything?

How do you do this when the screen is black and you can't see anything?

This is very easy.
Right when your laptop is booting, spam (press repeatedly like your hand is having a seizure) the F8 button on your keyboard. You must do this very quickly. However, this has been met with little success for me, so another method is to Google search "Booting into Safe Mode with Networking on Windows 8 CP" (Google is AMAZING).
Once you have successfully booted into Safe Mode with Networking, you will realise "OMG WINDOWS 8 LOOKS AMAZING AND CONFUSING (yes, I did go there) and you will also notice after that, "OMG MY SCREEN WORKS".

Don't feel stupid, that's how I reacted too.

Next, down load the drivers mentioned earlier in the forum. Now, install them. If they don't work for you, come back here and complain, and I will show you how to get your laptop into a working state that doesn't involve Safe Mode, allowing your screen to work somewhat.

P.S I haven't tested the drivers yet, about to though, will return with results.

The drivers didn't work for me. Here's how I got it working:

1. Connect to a flat panel with an HDMI cable. Even though the laptop screen is shut off by Windows 8, the HDMI still works.
2. Open device manager (on the metro screen, just start typing "device man", then click "settings" on the right, then click "device manager")
3. Expand "Display adapters", right click "Intel HD Graphics..." and select "Disable"
4. Reboot, unplug the HDMI, and you should be in business

What are your resolution options?

The guy who sold you your laptop saying you cannot have more than one partition is either:
A: An idiot
B: An idiot or
C: Trying to sell you another laptop, and is an idiot.

You can have more than one partition on a HDD, I currently have 3 (Windows 7/Windows 8/Linux Mint)

Just make sure when you are installing your operating systems, you install Windows in chronological order
i.e: Windows XP before Windows Vista before Windows 7 before Windows 8

Also, if you are installing Linux as well, install Linux LAST.

As for hooking up a VGA connector, it works fine over VGA. The issue is that the graphics drivers will not communicate with the laptop screen, causing it to disable itself (turn itself off) once the drivers kick in. VGA works fine.

I recently gave my Dell Inspiron N5110 15R to my mother, and I am now using a Toshiba Sattelite A500.

However, if you wish to RESIZE partitions (Add partition without formatting data) your best bet is to find a bootable disc of advanced partitioning software. I normally use a Ubuntu Live CD (Home | Ubuntu) with the gParted program to resize partitions and add new ones.

BE WARNED: Modifying your partition tables too much can make the HDD unstable. Make changes with care and don't overdo it!

Also, don't talk about partitions as C: D: etc, use Volume 1, Volume 2 etc
Using Windows-only letters will leave you confused and frustrated when using advanced partition editors.

However, I won't go into any more details about formatting here, this thread is not about formatting issues, I suggest you do some Googling, or make a thread on the forum and ask there. Alternatively, PM me :p

And, while you are at it why not label the partitions as something sensible ..... WIN7, WIN8, Data etc.

Lawl, Good idea. This guy has brains ^^^

Anyhoof, it's been nearly 6 months, and there is no progress on the Intel Graphics front. In fact, I don't think Intel have updated their graphics drivers since January. They may be due for an update soon, keep your eyes peeled.

Since I'm no longer using Intel HD 3000 Graphics, I can no longer really do any bug-testing at all with any new drivers.
However, I will be doing more research into this issue for you guys.

Still not fixed with Windows 8 RTM (the final version of Windows 8). It's Intel or Dell's problem, they better fix it before I buy the $14 upgrade to Windows 8.

(Windows 8 works when I disable the Intel HD Graphics driver, but the screen resolution is not changable and is messed up. Downloading Intel's drivers never worked for the Release Preview or the RTM)

Personally, I have written off Windows 8. The experience I have had so far was pretty dismal. I am going to be rocking Windows 7 for now.

I quite like the Windows 8. The amount of shortcuts i've had to make to make doing simple things (Turning my computer off) my desktop is nearly full. I've also had to disable the Intel HD Graphics driver to get it working to my resolution is naff! I'm use windows 8 at work and now i know how to use it i really do quite like it!

Any advancements of the Intel HD Graphics driver?
