The PC is an HP Pavilion tower; Macrium shows five partitions:

Windows 8.1 disk management shows four:

On the other hand, the disk manager list shows five:

It seems to me the HP used UFI GPT based partitioning. Since the "C" drive has the boot record, can I just backup "C" drive and restore it on the same, or new drive?

What I do is click in Macrium to the left of the drive display, where it says "back up partitions required to restore Windows."

It knows what to do.

What Macrium is showing is normal for a UEFI install. The 128 MB partition is the MSR partition and can be seen using Diskpart.

You need the first 4 partitions, which is what Macrium may have selected and a Windows Image Backup will count as critical to the boot and operation of the OS.

Make sure you are using the up to date version of Macium, which will use winre5 for the Recovery USB drive, which fully supports Windows 8/8.1, uEFI, GPT & Secure Boot.
Which is signed by Microsoft.

Thanks everyone...

I am using the Macrium v.5.2, where the default WinPE version is 4, but version 5 is available. Thanks theog...

So, OEM preinstalled Windows moved from having one or two partition critical for the system to three or four? In this PC, Macrium marked partition 2, 3, and 4 as critical for Windows 8.1 operation; one and five is HP stuff, not required for Windows.

So, the question becomes... Can I restore partition 2, 3, and 4 to a new drive using Macrium? Or more accurately, will Windows 8.1 boot after the restore?

I haven't worked on an OEM PC for a while and just trying improve the boot speed of the system. This is not my system, just setting it up for someone. Maybe having SSDs in all of my systems sort of spoiled me and cannot tolerate more than 15-20 seconds boot up time. This new HP desktop takes about two minutes to boot...

I tested the image for just backing up the needed partitions to restore Windows.

My other partitions were not affected.
They are still there.

That makes a big difference.

If it's clean, you get what you imaged.

If it's not, your other partitions are unaffected. :)

Good information. :)
