What are the effects of bad sectors on installations

By the way Master Chief, should I avoid installing any third party firewalls or antivirus programs for the time being, or should I just go ahead and install them?

I would definitely hold off on these for now, until I have a chance to evaluate the system as is. Many of them are just asking for troubles, especially with Windows 8.

Masterchief --Windows update causes my system to crash

    Hi Masterchief.

As you requested here's some of my info. I'll try to force a crash too and add that in the next post on this thread. (By the way, this was pre-crash. I don't know if it makes a difference or not.)

    The crash files

Hmm...I guess my thread got moved back here so I guess I'll post the crash files here. Sorry for the inconvenience Brink. I was told to put it in the debug section.

No inconvenience. I am guessing Brink just wanted one issue to remain in one thread, which does make the most sense and makes it easier for those interested in following or commenting too, to do so.

Your machine is currently in outstanding state for Windows 8 build 9200, x64 (64 bit).

About the only thing I can pick out (which only sometimes can be a problem) is that you do not have Intel's proprietary driver installed for your storage, and that usually means that the Intel Chipset INF Update Utility has not been installed either. So, 2 things. Install both from Intel.com. One storage, one INF Update Chipset Update Utility to install:

    Code:
    Name Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller - 1E02
    Manufacturer Intel
    Status OK
    PNP Device ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1E02&SUBSYS_1E021849&REV_04\3&11583659&0&FA
    I/O Port 0x0000F0B0-0x0000F0B7
    I/O Port 0x0000F0A0-0x0000F0A3
    I/O Port 0x0000F090-0x0000F097
    I/O Port 0x0000F080-0x0000F083
    I/O Port 0x0000F060-0x0000F07F
    Memory Address 0xF7C16000-0xF7C167FF
    IRQ Channel IRQ 19
    Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\storahci.sys (6.2.9200.16384, 75.73 KB (77,552 bytes), 7/26/2012 11:30 AM)
If Intel's site drives you mad (lol sometimes it does to me, so) see if Asrock has mid-late 2013 drivers for your motherboard model for the things I just said. It's also a good idea to update your bios from there, from the September 11, 2012 version you have now - if new is available.

    Another problem, another log

I'll add the chips today. But I'm adding another log, whether, it'll show the exact same info as the last one, I don't know, but since the forced crash, the systems gone loopy again. Namely, it took 5 minutes to shut down, and this morning it took 5 minutes for the tiles menu to appear and another 15 minutes for things to speed up. In short, the same problems I was experiencing after Windows Update crashed the system. Anyway, here it is.

There are a bunch of downloads on the asrock page. Which ones should I download. Perhaps better put, are there any I don't need?

    ASRock > H77M and

    ASRock > H77M.

That BIOS warning at the top of the page is a little scary.

Install every driver shown (besides SATA floppy and VGA - you already have latest Intel graphics installed), and latest bios too.

Forget the warning. Just make sure you don't lose power from the wall to your machine for the few seconds it updates. It's very simple/easy.

Install this INF instead of the one on Asrock's site. If you already installed the one from Asrock, do this one too anyway:
