I just bought this laptop last week. It came with Windows 8. When I go to the store to update to Windows 8.1, it tells me "You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows 8.1, try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and trying the update again."

I am the only user of this computer and it is an administrator account. Why can't I install?

When you open a command prompt using "Run as administrator"

Do you get

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\WINDOWS\system32>

or do you get something like

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]
(c) 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

This has been a recurring problem for quite a lot of users. Please try the following:

Navigate to Control Panel > Uninstall a program > View installed updates (located on the left pane) > Uninstall the Microsoft Update KB2871389

Download and re-install the update manually using the following link: Update is available that prepares Windows 8 and Windows RT-based computers for the update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT

Reboot your computer and access your Windows Store. You should be able to download the Windows 8.1 update.

Uninstalling that update worked for me! It was a pain to find it, but it was accomplished!

Thank you!
