Windows 8:Your PC ran into a problem

Well I recently reinstalled my windows 8 on my Lenovo laptop because of inability to bootup. The problem that caused this I think was when I was playing SWTOR and was getting frequent lag spikes of 100% disk usage, I thought I should install some updates. I believe they were nVidia updates from the windows update in the control panel. The updates caused my computer to become frozen for an extended period of time so I forced reboot. It went through 'Preparing automatic repair' infinite loops every time I tried to reboot afterwards.

Now I have completely reset my disk and reinstalled windows 8 from a protected partition on my disk, but after logging in for the first time and doing the first round of updates, I'm stuck on this message:

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart"

It flashes so quick that's all I can read.

Whenever I bootup, the Lenovo brand pops up and it says "Preparing automatic repair", shows the loading sign, goes to a black screen for a long time, and then flashes that blue screen with the unhappy face. It just loops that and nothing else.

I haven't been able to get to safe mode with the shift + f8 or into any screen besides the ones i previously mentioned. I've looked up this problem on the internet but I cannot find a solution to my problem.

For those wondering I do not have a disk drive nor do i have a backup disk/usb drive. My backup partition is on my computer's protected partition.

    Hey,

Put the hard drive in a desktop machine, then attach the contents of \Windows\Minidump after you zip or rar them, to a new post here.

You might have to take ownership of the folder and then also files inside too, first.

We'll fix it up. Probably some antivirus funk, but we'll see. Might be something simple, or we may have some work to do, heh.

In the meantime, good idea to make sure bios is set to Optimized Defaults.

You can leave the hdd in the desktop for now, because that's how we'll likely fix it.

Well, that leaves us limited options, since you say you don't have an optical drive nor a USB drive.

The best thing I can suggest then at the moment under this scenario is to ask a friend, relative or neighbor to borrow a USB stick so you can put Knoppix on it and then boot to it. You can access the files that way and put them on the USB key, then attach USB key to a working machine to post them here.

You can also use Knoppix to make repairs, when we figure out the cause(s).

Other than that, without a desktop machine, optical drive or USB key to install Windows fresh from, there's not much else to do.

I do have usb drive, just not a backup one. Sorry for the weird wording.

Ill put knoppix on my usb and do what you said.

Are there any special programs I should use to install knoppix onto my usb?

Also, I don't know how to boot my laptop from usb.

To boot to USB, you need to access the bios settings and change the boot order of drives (while the USB key is inserted.) Put the USB at top. It will likely be shown as a hard drive.

Sometimes, there is also an option to enable or disable USB booting. Then save.

This seems like an easy way to make a Knoppix USB key.

    Here is the Knoppix .iso

Any questions or if you run into a problem, let me know.

Alright I'm on knoppix and I can view my C Drive.

What files do you need and how do I get to them?

As far as i see, there are no minidump files or folders in the C:/windows.

You're sure you're looking at the Windows drive, right? (Since they don't have drive letters in Knoppix.) Just checking...

If you are, does this file exist? \Windows\Memory.DMP

    eh, shame really.

This is what you can try, although I don't think it will be very successful.

Delete all the contents inside \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download so that folder becomes empty.

Then try to boot to the hard drive to see if Windows comes up well.

Before doing that though, did you have a 3rd party antivirus installed at all before the system went down?
