Not enough disk space

This is what's happening when I attempt to install, same applies when trying to boot from DVD.

If you wanted to install on partition H:\, there is indeed not enough space. I assume you did not want to install on partition C:\ and destroy your current OS.

Before you go any further, post a full picture of your Disk Management so that we can make sure you do not make any damage - e.g. with Dynamic partitions.

Ah another gripe. Every time I restart my computer the VHD I created disappears. Basically I have created a 40GB VHD which eats into C:\ as you can see below. Regardless of whether the VHD is attached or not I still get the low space error.

OK, that's what I suspected. You have 4 primaries on disk0. You have to remove one partition - probably the small H :\ partition.

1. since there is a bit of data on H:\., save that data first

2. right click on H:\ (in Disk Management) and delete volume and delete partition until you have unallocated space

3. right click on C:\ and shrink that partition

4. right click on the unallocated space you got from the shrinking of C:\ and define a new simple (logical) partition of appr. 20 to 40GBs

Note: You can install Windows 8 in a logical partition because you have an active, primary partition to which the BCD will be added.

5. Install Windows 8 into that newly created partition.

6. If you ever want to get rid of the double boot, those are the steps to follow: Dual Boot - Delete a OS - Windows 7 Forums

Hi there
you don't actually have to do that -- if you convert the disk to GPT format you don't run into the primary partion limitation -- you can have up to 124 !!!.

ALWAYS BACKUP ANY DATA before messing around with disks though -- decent DISK imaging program like acronis or macrium should be fine.

If you convert to GPT, like Jimbo said, you require UEFI capabilities (alongside your BIOS or replacing the BIOS) in order to boot from the GPT disk.

Make sure your pc has uefi.

good luck

All I want to do is create a VHD to install Win8 on, not mess around with all these other options. Regardless I still get the same low disk message :S

It worked also virtually in Virtualbox.

I guess the HP partitions have to do something with the error you get. (I also have HP laptop but I reduced my partition number a while ago => 4 primary partitions on a hdd are the limit)

Your H drive seems to be dynamical. But the rest of the partitions are primary but almost full.

This is what I did also in the test:
...hope the images are visible...

1. made a vhd on a 80gb drive, attached it...
1.png

2. chosed the vhd (25gb) and as expected there was a warning
2.png

3. the warning is this
3.png

4. clicked next to install
4.png

5. after install at the boot screen
5.png

6. in Win8 you see that Disk1 is my vhd drive
6.png

7. back on Win7 you see the (not yet attached) vhd on root of my c drive (80gb)
7.png

8. after attachment of vhd, it appears as drive e: (Disk 1) which has a primary partition
8.png

On my real configuration I have ONLY a 500gb disk with ONLY 3 primary partitions.
A 25gb vhd worked the first time I followed the tutorial. The vhd was created on root of c drive which is primary partition of Windows 7.

So I don't have a solution for your case at the moment.
Search for more info about the default partitions that HP made on the disk (I think the problem is here + you seem to run out of space on the primary partitions).

I hope you find a workaround on the problem
