Unable to use built-in ASUS recovery partition

Hello, it seems that this is a common problem, especially for Asus laptop OEM products. I too have the same/similar problem. I purchased an Asus F550 ca laptop running Win8. Recently I upgraded to 8.1 and my computer started running slow. I have also formatted my DATA partition. I have read all the posts and now find myself scratching my head.

I got this far, and now am in need of some assistance. Please help, I have spent the last 2 days trying to solve this problem and I am getting overheated trying all the things on this thread. ANY help to get the 20 gig OEM partition to reset to factory settings will be greatly appreciated. I want to reset my PC and ASUS wanted to charge me $165.00 plus freight each way. No chance it is going to happen as this will be over 1/2 the cost of the laptop. If anyone can guide me PLEASE HELP.

    Hi BanxStar,

    Welcome to the forum,

Can you try saving those screenshots as jpeg and see if that helps, they are getting corrupted somehow.

Someone will be along to help with your other issue as well.

It would seem that all I need to do is change the following - but this is my uninformed opinion

    "Windows RE location \\?\globalroot\device\harddisk0\partition2\Recovery\windowsRE" to
    ""Windows RE location \\?\globalroot\device\harddisk0\partition5\Recovery\windowsRE"

Would this work? It appears partition2 is windows 8.1 and that partition5 is windows 8.0? I don't know if windowsRE would be named the same on partition5 as it is on partition2?

partition 2 for windows 8.0 windows RE and partition 7 for your factory recovery images - so your reagentc /info appears to be correct..

the 450MB partition 5 was written by windows 8.1 and contain windowsRE for 8.1

    Thanks KYHI,
Yeah, you may be right, but because the reagentc points to partition 2, I thought it would be the other way round because this is the latest setting but you are probably right. Partition 7 definitely the factory recovery image. I had a look with Easus partition manage free. I do have a recovery thumb drive but only set it up yesterday after finding a program called diskcopy in my \windows\system32 folder. I'm not sure how to proceed from here.

So I tried what I said and pointed the reagentc to "partition5". With it pointed to partition2 I get the error message "a partition is missing" and when I pointed it to partition5 I got the error message to "insert backup media" as in other peoples posts. Win8.1 reset definitely not compatable with with Win8.0 as per the statements made by people on earlier posts. I will be thumbing up quite a few of other peoples posts. Some of the people who get reagentc errors haven't been using the command prompt as administrator, however. I would have followed some of the other guys posts and downloaded the files and installed them but I'm not sure that the files supplied would be the same for my setup.

    ASUS restore harder than expected.

I am also experiencing the same exact issue... have followed this EXCELLENT thread but have not tried to change the 'recovery' path. I think that is where I'm hung up... As long as this is still open, I will post a few of the dos screen shots and see if I too can get a bit of help.
    Thank you.
