Just wondering.. Can I make a new install.wim file and replace the current one so it factory resets to 8.1 instead?

Do you want clean install of windows 8.1 recovery? Or an upgraded windows 8 to 8.1 recovery..

for upgraded custom refresh> Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image

or you could capture your upgraded installation via

    dism /Capture-Image /CaptureDir:C:\ /ImageFile: R:\RecoveryImage\Install.wim /Name:"Windows 8.1 Upgrade"

you would have assign letter r to recovery partition - move old factory image out or rename it -

But this process is from winPE or setup disk boot repair pc - command prompt

Just create a custom refresh image and put it in a hidden folder on C:

This way they can reset to factory or refresh back to a clean upgraded 8.1

I might just leave it with the upgraded version and fix the path for the recovery and that's it. The next guy can figure out how to upgrade to 8.1 if he needs to... It's not hard.. Just takes a long time. On my Alienware laptop I ha e an image with everything installed and I can flash the refresh in 15 minutes with everything ready to go... That's how I prefer it.

    at command prompt

    recimg /createimage C:\CustomRefresh

    then hide folder..

    recovery partition problem

Hey guys, I came across this thread because I am having trouble resetting our Asus Laptop with the recovery image, used the GUI in the 'Change PC Settings' and it basically just reboots to the F9 recovery option and that is where i first discovered the issue with it saying there was a recovery partition or something of that nature missing. So I'll help you guys with screenshots of whatever you need if you can help me figure what is wrong with my system. I have tried SIW2's solution

here Unable to use built-in ASUS recovery partition with the bootable USB drive but in his directions, here ..

"Boot it up and you will get a menu. To install from .swm files, click the SWMINSTALL button on the menu. Browse to the Install.swm file. You will want to select the image called Push Button Reset or similar, it is probably image 2."

i dont have the option to install from .swm files or see anywhere an SWMINSTALL button..

I am trying to see if copying the install.swm file from my recovery drive to the USB drive /resources folder will help as that was one of the things i missed from the directions.
