    @powerdrome,

    You run the runasadmin.cmd.

It finds winre on your hard drive. It adds some tools to winre. It makes an iso.

You burn the the iso to cd/dvd. Or use Rufus to put the iso contents on usb stcick.

You boot the cd/dvd/usb stick. That is it.

@SIW2 I have successfully created a bootable flash drive, but during the process the following messages occurred:

    path to wim is C:\Rev19\ISO\sources\8.0x64WinRE.wim

Cannot find archive C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Tool\WDO_media64.iso
    Cannot find archive C:\Rev19\MS\boot.wim
[WARNING] 36 streams had incorrect reference count

The recovery doesn't work: it just drops out after keyboard selection.

What files should be in the sources folder? There is only one file (8.0x64WinRE.wim). Does this point to the recovery partition on my hard drive?

I am trying to recover an 8.0 installation from an 8.1 upgrade. Is the 8.0x64WinRE.wim file the right one to use or should it be the 8.1 version?

Sorry to trouble you with these queries, but I am getting pretty desperate...

8.0winre.wim is the correct file. It matches the 8.0 install.wim on your recovery partition.

Very strange it drops out after keyboard selection. Haven't come across that before.

The idea is that winre.wim is bootable ( it loads into ram). From there you browse to wherever the install.wim is and copy the windows files out of install.wim onto your hard drive.

That copying can be done using any number of things that are capable of applying wim files. Several of those have been included in the bootable media you now have.

Now you have the correct winre.wim file, there is another approach.

Copy 8.0winre.wim onto your hardrive somewhere. You then need to rename it to simply winre.wim.

You can use reagentc to set winre.wim as the recovery image, and also set your install.wim as the osimage.

That way, you can boot winre.wim off the hard drive by selecting reset option from within windows.

Open an elevated command prompt and type reagentc /? and it tells you how to do that.

what u mean "it adds some tools to winre"?
does it change something in the winre partition or recovery partition?
Or it just create a folder with all the things it needs and create the iso?

does it change something in the winre partition or recovery partition?
No,it copies winre.wim to it's own directory. The original winre.wim remains untouched.

    Yes
