I used your tool and it worked great, until I selected my install.wim file. It said that the file contained multiple recovery images (or something similar) and it gave me the option to choose from a list of about 4 images. I didn't know which one to choose so I decided to come back to the forums to ask. And then I saw the post ariftwister made. EaseUS had set the type of my recovery partitions from Recovery to OEM, and so Windows had trouble finding them (since it was looking for a Recovery partition).

So I did the following to fix it:
    - Open CMD
    - Type diskpart
    - Type list disk
    - Select the disk with the recovery partition, using select disk # (mine was select disk 0)
    - Type list partition
    - Select the recovery partition, using select partition # (mine was select partition 6). The partition has OEM listed as its type.
    - Then I used set id=27 to set the id to that of Recovery, but since my drive was GPT and not MBR, it didn't work.
    - So, I did some Googling and found that for a GPT disk I had to use set id=DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC
    - So I did set id=DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC
    - It succeeded, so I again typed list partition and it was now listed as Recovery!
    - Rebooted into the Recovery Environment, and it detected my Restore partition and allowed me to reset.

    I couldn't be happier
And also thanks to everyone for the help, and even though I didn't fully use your tool SIW, I'm sure it can help others a lot, and I really appreciate you making it.

I'm going to restore now, and if it succeeds I'll come back here and mark this thread as solved.

    Hi guys,

Can you provide the tool developed by siw2 ( to create a bootable usb drive? The dropbox links are all broken.

Make sure to download and install free versions of "Partition Guru" and "Partition Assistant" before running the builder.

    PartitionGuru 4.6.1 download -

I'm having the same problem, only I can't understand how they're managing to copy an 8.6gb install.wim file onto a fat32 formatted flash drive.

I'm having the same problem, only I can't understand how they're managing to copy an 8.6gb install.wim file onto a fat32 formatted flash drive.
Install.wim or Install.swm (splitted WIM ) will be stored inside the hidden 15 -20 GB sized recovery partition. Usually Windows won't allow you to assign drive letter and browse the partition. However you can access and copy the contents using "PartitionGuru".

    "PartitionGuru" download :

    How to copy files :

If your install.wim is sized 8.6 GB, copy it to a NTFS formatted drive. You can use another flash drive with FAT32 file system for UEFI boot.

Guys, I too have been having similar problems with my Asus N550JV. I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and started facing frustrating problems. All I want is to reset my PC via the recovery partition but when I do try, the system claims that the recovery partition is not found. I tried to follow the steps that were mentioned to Qub1 to diagnose his problems and I'm attaching pictures.

Can someone please help and tell me how qub1 got his problem solved? I'm trying to understand the solution but I just can't since I'm not tech savvy and a complete novice at this.

You have included many help attachments for us to check your system. But I do not see a directory listing of the 450 MB Recovery partition..

The 8 to 8.1 updates added the 450 MB partition and set up the Reset to work through those tools, except for some. You, and others like you are still showing the original Recovery tools partition (2) when it should be partition 5, or at least that what seems to be correct.

If you get the listing in the 450 MB partition and it shows a Recovery\WindowsRE directory, I will suggest you use Reagentc to set the Recovery tools to that partition.

Your reagent.xml file seems to have the necessary entries for the Reset to work, although I can not confirm their accuracy. But the difference mainly hinges of the offset for the Partition containing the Winre.wim file.

Other differences, which I do not know the meaning of are the ScheduledOperation state and the OperationParam path.

Edit: My BCD store also has Ramdisk entries for both the original Recovery and the Added 450 MB partition.
