Having problems with windows 8 too 8.1 upgrade

I have recently purchased a new laptop [a referb]
it had a fresh install of windows 8. i want to update it to windows 8.1
i've done asus' updates for drivers and what not
now when i clicked check for updates, at first it found 96[22 optional] so i clicked install, after around 1 hour it was still at 0% 0kb
so i cancelled it, reboot, and then checked for updates, and now its taking forever.

You only need install KB2871389 update.

"Although the Windows 8.1 update is downloaded and installed from the Store, your PC needs a Windows Update, KB2871389, before Windows 8.1 becomes available to you in the Store."

Install from link or from Windows Update.

Update is available that prepares Windows 8 and Windows RT-based computers for the update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT

Also if you want the other updates as well, click on the biggest sized update first and ignore the optional updates. Whittle the list down until the updates start flowing.
