Upgrading from Win 8 to Win 8.1 over LAN?

***Keep in mind that I'm trying to upgrade Win 8 to 8.1, not perform a clean install.***

My 4 GB flash drive is having issues taking in the bootable ISO. I've tried Rufus USB, Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool, nothing works. I don't have a working disc drive at the moment, which is why my last resort is to attempt to install it over the network.

I have 2 PCs in the house. One of which I'd like to use to "host" the ISO file in order for my 2nd (Win 8) PC to install it via WiFi.

Please tell me this is possible. I'm very tech literate and am willing to do whatever it takes. Thank you!

    Hello Steve,

If you like, you could also upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Store for free using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below. This method would be a lot easier to do.

    Hope this helps,

IF YOU DOWNLOADED THE WINDOWS 8.1 FROM MICROSOFT'S SITE YOU DON'T NEED ANY SPECIAL SOFTWARE TO MAKE A BOOTABLE FLASH DRIVE. Just put your flash drive in and select flash drive, instead of install now. Be fore warned if you have personal files on a 2nd hard drive, unplug it first.

    Hello Keith,

I believe he was using software like Rufus to make a bootable UEFI USB with.

You don't need special software for uefi. 8 and 8.1 are both made for uefi and bios. Trust me from experience a uefi will label a drive uefi if it has a bootable Windows 8 or 8.1 dvd or flash drive.

True, but you need to create the bootable USB for UEFI using something like Rufus to make it easier for most to do what Ray (theog) posted below for it work to install Windows 8/8.1 with UEFI.

If you just simply create a bootable DVD/USB as usual with the ISO, it will not install Windows 8/8.1 with UEFI, and only install as Legacy. At least this is the case with all the different 8/8.1 ISO files I've used so far.

    1) Would need to be x64.

    2) Flash drive would need to be formatted to FAT32.

    3) DVD or USB would need to be booted in UEFI mode.
