I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. I am trying to run backtrack 5r3 from my dvd drive. When I go to my boot ootions it wont allow me to change the order of my boot options and I have no idea how to add my dvd drive as a boot ootion. Can someone help me please? I realize I dont know much about this operating system but, Im trying to learn I just cant seem to find any unformation on the right way to do things in 8.1. Only windows 8. Thanks in advance.

Have you highlighted the First boot option & pressed Enter & then highlighted the DVD drive & pressed Enter & then exited saving changes ?

All I see is: Boot Option #1 [Windows Boot Manager (PO: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB.) When I press enter it only gives me a menu with that drive or disable. Ive heard it has to be done through the command prompt? I've no idea how.

I have 8.1 Pro.

You have 8.1.

My BIOS might be different.

On mine I enabled boot menu.
It assigned F-12 key at startup.

Sometimes I need to boot from a usb or dvd.
Even though I first set the first boot option to the needed media, I insert the usb or dvd & restart & press F-12 & the boot menu appears with 3 options, one of which is the usb or dvd.

This works for me.
Others may do it differently.

I have an ASUS q550lf. doesn it matter what type of pc it is? I tried hitting f9-f12 at startup. None of them work. I have to get to my boot options by going through windows and selecting the advanced uefi restart optiin.

On mine, in the bios I used the down arrow key to highlight Boot menu & pressed Enter & selected Enable.
The F-key showed up in the top right corner.

I think someone with plain 8.1 needs to pitch in & help.
Or Brink. :)

I really can't help further, having a different operating system. :(

You could use Macrium Reflect to make a full backup of all local drives.

Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

I'll describe the process mainly with pictures.

This will appear if you choose Yes:

It might take 2 or 3 hours to finish.

You should do this also:

That's it.
