Solved OEM version of Windows 8, want to upgrade with retail 8.1

Sorry if this is in the wrong section or a similar question has been asked before. My Desktop is Windows 7 Pro, (which I am used to), and I wondered can someone point me in the right direction please :eek:

I am getting, (hope) a new HP laptop for Xmas with OEM version of Windows 8. In case I wish to upgrade the hardware at a later date I intend buying a retail version of 8.1. My question is:- Is there anything I should watch out for when and if I can upgrade to 8.1. :confused:

We understand that many customers are receiving error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1. This error is typically caused by an incompatible driver.



If you are receiving this error:
1.
First, please double-check the error code. There are many variations of error 0xC1900101, each with a different location code -- the error extension, located after the dash. The information in this thread is intended only for location code 0x40017. If you are receiving a different location code, these steps are unlikely to resolve your issue.

2.
Check that you’ve already updated all of your drivers. In particular, if you have an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, make sure you’ve installed the latest Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers


3.
Check that you do not have any Frequently Asked Questions - What devices are supported by the SteelSeries Engine? that support the SteelSeries Engine installed on your PC. The SteelSeries Engine software is currently not supported on Windows 8.1. Please uninstall the software before attempting to update to Windows 8.1

You might want to get Macrium Reflect & make an image of the oem system as a backup.

I bought the recovery disks from Gateway too.
$20. I dont know what HP would charge for their disks.

Once you get 8.1 installed, making a backup image of it would be a good idea.
Theog has made some very important suggestions.

With Macrium you should add the boot option:

It appears when you restart.
Plug the usb image in before you restart so it shows up as a drive available to boot from.

Many, many thanks theog and David Bailey for getting back to me so quick. David, I thought you were the 'David Bayley' I used to work with before I retired. We were a team, in the print Him being the Engineer and me the Electronics/electrical guy. We worked as ateam keeping Web-offset Litho Printing Presses running. Sorry I digress. I will copy and print and bookmark both your suggestions and when I get to upgrading and it all works I will let you both know.

ps, I have just checked HP's website, for downloads, and there seems to be quite a lot, updates, drivers etc, so all looks promising :)

Hello again,

First things first:

1, Made sure Windows 8 was up to date, then downloaded and installed 8.1.

2, Had to disable protected mode in security of IE 11, IE would not load, because I use Vipre I.S. Search assist.

3, Error on Vipre Firewall, because I tried to setup a local network and got some of my settings wrong. Repaired Vipre and now all "Hunky Dory". :thumb: :)

I am yet to buy my own copy of 8.1, (in case of problems), but when I do I will get back to you both. Meanwhile I will mark this thread/post as solved.

Can I raise another post? or carry on from this one??
