Hello!

My female friend is building a new computer and trying to save every pound possible.
We got to the point where everything is ordered and we just need the OS.

So we found this : Windows 8.1 Pro Student - Microsoft Store United Kingdom Online Store

I was very excited to save about 40 pounds on the OS. Except for this:
Important: Windows 8.1 full version is for Windows 7 users only.

I asked people and someone told me about the double install trick, which led me to your forum after some googling!
The reason I'm posting this is that I want to make sure I'm not doing a mistake buying this version. I intend to install it on an empty hard drive, a totally clean system. I want a fully working and activated Windows 8.1.
Is this going to work? Do I need to download a Windows 7 ISO and install trial version to use this upgrade? In case of something going wrong, do I have a guarantee that I can install something with this, at least a non-activated windows until I find a new solution?

Thanks for your time, this is quite urgent for us as we need to order really soon!

Your friend will need to buy using a email ending in ac.uk in the UK.

That it is a full version and can be clean installed. You can use it to upgrade from Windows 7 and it will transfer your files but you can't use it to upgrade from XP or Vista as it will not transfer anything and requires a clean install.

Why do they say it is for Windows 7 users only if it's a full install?

So you're saying she can go for it, and she will be able to have a clean install of Windows 8.1 64 bits on her new empty hard drive?
No surprises?

That statement has been hashed around a lot since they said it, and as I explained in my post they are talking about Upgrading as opposed to a clean install. Yes it will work fine as a clean install. See Brinks Tutorial for more information.

Ok, apparently after buying she got to download a tool called windowssetupbox.exe.
She says it is windows 8.1 installer, so is everything normal? Can she download the full .iso file to install Windows 8.1?

I need confirmation from someone who is familiar with the steps, this is all new to me and I'm helping her remotely!
