    Thinking of upgrading to 8.1

I have windows 7 Home Edition on desktop and same for my laptop.
How much would it cost to go to win8 on laptop and would it be worth it?

I know Have to back up laptop buy and download win8 then download 8.1 or is there a cheaper way to do this?
Is there anything I forgot or need to know before buying win 8. Have the recover files on laptop on separate drive.
Pro's and Con's would be nice from all here in the forum.

Many thanks in the meantime and have a great week-end.
    THW

    Hello,

We understand that many customers are receiving error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1. This error is typically caused by an incompatible driver.

If you are receiving this error:
    1.
First, please double-check the error code. There are many variations of error 0xC1900101, each with a different location code -- the error extension, located after the dash. The information in this thread is intended only for location code 0x40017. If you are receiving a different location code, these steps are unlikely to resolve your issue.

Well since win 8.1 is officially out their you might find some vendor or vendors that may be dumping inventory Win 8 DVD versions. Then 8.1 is a free upgrade presently.

I would suggest you go to your manufacture support download site or sites and download the latest drivers looking for any that are 8.1 specific, For me it was Video, WiFi Lan and Bluetooth for 8.1 the rest of the drivers I downloaded were for Win 8.
There seem to be some issues with in place upgrades. Most have no problems but plenty do. I think it's best to Clean Install 8.1.

A good thing would be to google : your specific PC's designation + "windows 8". That might give you some insight if there are any installation/compatibility problems beforehand. If you find too many users with unsolvable problems (ex: incompatible drivers, which seems to happen a lot with win8 especially with network cards), then you're probably better off staying with 7. While windows 8 is nice, if your system works perfectly under 7, there's no real reason to upgrade yet.
