Trouble with fresh install Windows 8.1

I am having some trouble installing a fresh copy of windows 8.1 on my desktop. I needed to upgrade from windows XP, so I purchased a new hard drive, 4GB of ram and windows 8.1. I can install windows, but the computer randomly restarts during the setup/personalization process, causing a failed install. I have all external devices disconnected except keyboard/mouse/monitor. I even unhooked all the chassis fans (except cpu fan) and removed my old ram sticks and wireless card assuming I may have a power supply problem, but no gain. Any help?

No, I only own 8.1, XP and most previous versions of windows. I have never had a problem like this.

Ok....for now install xp & then check for any errors in all drives with a better disk check utility or windows built in utility & full scan with malwarebytes or if u have any other good antivirus, check with that !!

Are you sure your CPU is compatible with 8.1?

You could try installing 32bit 8.1. If that works then the CPU is the problem and you'd have to either stick with that (and less RAM), change our CPU or install Windows 8 instead.
