Slow start-up after installing windows 8.1

Hello,

My Asus UX32V is starting up extremely slow after installing windows 8.1. I have been searching the web for answers and possible solutions, but haven't found any. Although the problem seems to happen to other users.

The first time I installed 8.1 the start-up became very slow also. I, kind of, accepted this and did a fresh installation of windows 8. The PC started up normal again (around 1 minute). Before installing 8.1 I decided to update all the drivers and complete all the windows updates. The only other program that was installed was IObit. I didn't update any of the apps.

After installation of windows 8.1 and another windows update the start-up went as follows (times are in minutes:seconds):
00:00 - start
02:45 - ASUS logo appears
13:35 - ASUS + windows loading signal
18:00 - black screen
18:22 - log in screen
The windows logo never appears.

After uninstalling the IObit software the start-up went as follows:
00:00 - start
(forgot to log the time for the ASUS logo to appear)
07:00 - black screen
13:34 - ASUS logo + windows loading signal
17:55 - black screen
18:30 - log in screen
Again the windows logo didn't appear.

Then I read somewhere to create a new user account. The start-up times after doing this were:
00:00 - start
02:45 - ASUS logo
06:45 - black screen
13:35 - ASUS + windows loading signal
17:55 - black screen
18:25 - log in screen
Again the windows logo didn't appear.

I did run Troubleshoot Computer - System Maintenance and "No changes or updates are needed".

I hope the information given is useful. Basically the start-up times don't change with the changes I did. The last thing I want to do is another clean install, the connection is very slow here and to get updates takes ages.

I did a clean boot start and it might have given some valuable info:
- A clean boot from complete switch off took about the same time as the normal start-up (18 min)
- A clean boot from restart (difference clear?) took "only" 5:10 min
- So that made me do a normal restart and that took 5:20 min

I was able to perform one safe mode start and didn't time it. The other 2 attempts failed with the PC switching off.

What is wrong here? How can I speed up the start-up? If you want me to do any more tests or if you have any solutions, please give details.

I'm getting a little desperate, because next week I'm moving back to Africa and over there the internet is even slower.

Thanks in advance,

Willem

Iobit is a company that sells many software titles...which one do you have. All that I've read and head about it, it's crapware/bloatware that just slows down ones system.

As I understand it, you had decent startup times on windows 8 and the problems started to show up after upgrading to 8.1 via the store, right ?

Try uninstalling anything installed by ASUS, there might be software incompatibilities (specially 3rd party anti-virus suites, which are often the cuplrit). Also check your services and check if anything not from Microsoft is there (for a list of services included in windows 8.1 check this : » Black Viper?s Windows 8.1 Service Configurations)
Unfortunately this might well be a driver problem, some of your hardware isn't playing nicely with the new OS. Don't rely on windows update and check the manufacturer's website for new drivers (maybe your bios too).

You could always try a clean install of 8.1 (bypassing the store), since there have been some problems when upgrading via the store, check http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html

If all of this doesn't work I would revert to windows 8, while some nice new features are included in 8.1, nothing forces you to do the upgrade so soon, 8 is supported till October 2015, you have time. By then 8.2 might be there, or maybe new drivers for you PC.

This product key cannot be used

Hello,

The message received when entering the key is:

"This product key cannot be used to install a retail version of Windows 8"

I was advised to try to do an install of 8.1 via iso. The update through the store made my laptop very slow.

What can I do next?

Gents, thanks for the reply.

The IObit program installed is Advanced Systemcare 7. I didn't have any problems before with this program.

I have the impression that the start-up times with only windows 8 installed were acceptable. I can't really remember what the time was when I purchased the laptop.

Reading the advise and links (posts) given it seems that there is no other option than to do another fresh install. Then I have to figure out how to get a Windows 8.1 iso, because the instructions given in the post didn't work (the product key is not accepted).

Taking in consideration the difference between start-up times for a start and restart a program(s) must be running (started) during a start and not during a restart. Or am I concluding the wrong thing here?

Going to back-up the drivers now and do a fresh installation.

Why isn't it possible to uninstall 8.1?

Hope to get some more feedback.

Ciao

The fact that the initial asus logo takes several minutes to come up says to me that there may be a problem with your laptop hardware or hard drive. The initial logo typically covers up the initial BIOS messages and it should appear within a few seconds of turning on the computer. Does the computer make any repetitive beeps or anything when it starts?

Some BIOS setups allow you to turn off the initial logo and see the initial BIOS boot messages. I would try going into the BIOS by hitting whatever key enters BIOS setup when the boot screen is on. There you may find a setting to turn off the logo and see what is really going on.

No beeps or any other noises.

I just started the new install, so when this is complete I'll give an update on starting times.

UPDATE:
Laptop doesn't want to refresh or recover anymore.

However, I discovered an extra partition, which wasn't there before. It is the 350 MB Recovery Partition. The others were there before. Did Windows 8.1 create this? Can I remove these? If yes, how?

Ottle,

So did you fix your issue? If so, how?

I'm having very similar problem on my Dell Inspiron 15-3537. Booting/waking up takes no less than 10 min after installing 8.1... Such a pain if i need to just open & start working or take notes for a class..

Otherwise, no issues (after initial 10+ minute eternity of unbearable lag, that is).

Sighhh, switching to 8.1 was a terrible idea..

I am sure that being in selective startup slows my laptop down but cannot get into Normal Startup.
