Hello, I have a Sony vaio VGX-TP20E. I put the win 8 disk into the computer and setup up the startup to boot from optical drive. But it skips it and starts up win 7 like it normally does. How can I install windows 8?

The first time I did that win7 had some kind of virus in it so I went to the recovery partition and restored the computer to factory settings.

So my other question is if I do somehow get it to work, do I have to delete the recovery partition or do I leave it alone. Logically it would only be able to recover for windows 7 right?

Thank you for your time.

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

You can order Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from your OEM manufacturer's website.
Most OEM's will ship Recovery DVD's for FREE, (may be a postage fee)

I already did the recovery. It was an option on the hard drive. I don't want to make a recovery disk I know how to do that. I want to install windows 8 on the machine but it won't boot from the optical drive. It just boots to win 7 as it normally would.

The "Win 8 disk" - which product is this, and how was it obtained? If bought as an upgrade, then it can run from within Windows 7. If it is a full retail version, and you want to dual boot with Windows 7, check out the eightforums tutorials.

Have you run the Windows 8 Upgrade Advisor? I think your Vaio originally came with Vista in 2008, maybe with a Windows 7 upgrade, so it would be sensible to check. Download the advisor here: Upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows Vista or Windows XP - Microsoft Windows
Check with Sony here: Sony eSupport - Windows 8 & 8.1 Upgrade information

Sony says:
[h=2]Use the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant to determine compatibility for your VGX-TP20E.[/h]Can I install Windows 8 or 8.1 on this model?
Sony does not support Windows 8 or 8.1 for your model, however, if your computer meets the system requirements to run the Windows 8 or 8.1 operating system, you should be able to install Windows 8 or 8.1 on it. To determine this, please use the Microsoft[SUP]®[/SUP] Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. This program scans your computer to see if your hardware, apps and software will work with Windows 8 or 8.1, and provide you a compatibility report, along with any Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 installation options for the computer.

Don't I need drivers from Sony for Windows 8 or Windows 8.1?

Not necessarily. Many basic system functionalities should be enabled with the drivers included within the Windows 8.1 operating system. Please note that Sony does not provide Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 drivers for this model.

Its a retail disk. Thanks for the assistant thing. I will try that. I was thinking the hardware is good enough to run windows 7 / vista, so why not 8.
