Hi, thank you in advance for any and all replies!
My toshiba satalite laptop fell and the hard drive needed to be replaced. It came in the mail today and I installed it without problems but when I try to start I get this sole message: Boot media (failed). And I don't have a windows 8 installation disc-did not come with laptop/I'm suppose to burn one off this laptop but haven't had a change yet:cry:
What is going on?
Do I need to buy a new windows 8 OS from Toshiba too???

No you don't need to buy another copy of Win 8, your product key is embedded on your motherboard. You will have to clean install win 8 or 8.1. If you don't have a drivers disk you will need to download your hardware drivers.

You can download an ISO or just borrow a hard copy from someone? Should be the same version as what you have Core or Pro. Go through the sticky's in this section. once your installed you can extract your key if you don't already know what it is? you also need to know if your system is MBR or UEFI GPT? you'll create your install media differently for the different systems all the new systems are UEFI GPT not BIOS MBR

If you can get your hands on a Windows 8 DVD it will read the embedded code automatically during the install and install the matching version all by itself. You won't be prompted to enter a product code. Windows 8.1 is a different story though, it won't accept a Windows 8 product code during installation. You need to use a Windows 8.1 code to get it installed, there are leaked install codes that will let you install but won't activate. Once its installed you can activate as posted in the tutorial in the above post. Your going to have a hard time getting an ISO as the download trick mentioned in another thread here on 8 forums won't accept OEM keys. Good luck.

Did Toshiba tell you the drive would be pre-installed with the OS?

Have you checked the bios to see if it is set as first priority in the boot devices? And it may need to show as Windows Boot Manager if you have an UEFI system, and if the OS was pre-installed, it probably is.

Do you know how to access the BIOS and set your boot order?
Does the new hard drive show up in the BIOS correctly?
What error message did you get when the original drive was in the laptop?
You mentioned your laptop was dropped, it may be more than a damaged hard drive.

HI, thanks for replying.
Yes I did figure out how to set the boot order, the hard drive shows up and seems to be correct:confused: .
I installed a new hard drive only-meaning no OS.
Would a recovery disk from Toshiba work ? I don't understand if I have an OS to 'recover' or not???

Just wanted to verify that the hard drive wasn't preconfigured by Toshiba. If it had been, it should have been plug and play. A blank drive means no recovery partition to restore from. You'll need either recovery disks from Toshiba, or a Windows DVD to do a clean install from.

Hi there.

I would imagine the HDD is causing a problem because it hasn't been initialized yet or hasn't got a partition set to ACTIVE yet :

(Even if the disk is already factory formatted the partition might have only been set to PRIMARY and not ACTIVE as well).

download a BOOTABLE copy of GPARTED (it works also on a USB stick) and boot from this to format / create an ACTIVE primary partition on your HDD -- I'd make it a GPT drive rather than an MBR one - your Toshiba will boot from a GPT drive and saves all sorts of problems later with PROTECT BOOT etc.

GParted -- A free application for graphically managing disk device partitions

(Unlike Partition Wizard from minitools this one CAN create a BOOTABLE USB right from the download !! - you don't get passed around non-existant links - especially if you don't actually have a physical CD drive so you need to make the USB from "mounted virtual ISO" and is FREE - partition wizard only includes the USB functionality if you PAY for "PRO" version and even then as I said you still don't get the bootable USB facility in all cases).

When booting GPARTED set the PROTECTED BOOT OFF in the BIOS - enable legacy boot or something like that in the BIOS and allow the machine to boot from the external device - you don't have to turn UEFI off - just the protected boot bit.

If the HDD is OK then follow the instructions earlier in the thread on recovering your Windows system.

Cheers
jimbo

OEM PC's that come with Windows 8 installed from the factory have an embedded Product code. Your regular Microsoft Windows 8 install media will read it automatically and install the matching version without asking for a key to be entered during the install. The current Windows 8.1 install media will not use a Windows 8 code for install but can be activated with a Windows 8 code. The ISO's are hard to come by. One way to get one is this, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/18309-windows-8-windows-8-1-iso-download-create.html?filter. You need a product code to enter to get it and I don't think OEM keys will work. I'd have to read though it again to confirm that. http://www.eightforums.com/installa...retail-windows-8-1-windows-8-product-key.html. There are tutorials like this to go by for doing the installation once you obtain media. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorial...are-interface-install-windows-8-a.html?filter. If you know somebody that has a Retail DVD just ask them to burn you a copy or make you an ISO. You don't need their product code to install it just the media.

HI, all of these solutions sound great but I can't get to where I can apply them:(
from the point of turning the machine on-black screen-'No bootable device (fail)-Please restart system.
I can get to the bios and setup but when I tried to set the order of booting up as the USB 1st ( I had the link above downloaded onto it) Nothing happens but the above message........
