Hi,

I just bought a new Gateway laptop that's come pre-installed with Win8.

I've just gone through the initial setup and before I use it, need to make the initial Win8 and system backup incase I need to restore the system should something go wrong.
I want to do this BEFORE anything (I've not even installed any anti-virus yet)

I'm totally new to Win8 and would really appreciate if someone could guide me through the process.

Thanks in anticipation.

Warm Regards.

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

information   Information

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.

I personally DO NOT RECOMMEND using this METHOD above, as of the ERRORS you may receive below with the Microsoft Recovery USB Drive. You would be best off using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or Recovery USB drive.

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.

or
You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

The Windows Recovery USB drive & Recovery Partition can be very problematic, I recommend you also make a Windows System Image.

I have not received any disks with the laptop.

The laptop came in it's original box with the charger and power supply. When I asked for the manuals or disks I was told that they are never packaged as separate but are all pre-installed.
That is why I urgently want to make backups of the system - should it crash, atleast I can re-install the Windows 8.

Ah, so I have to make the OEM Recovery Disks from what is already installed in the laptop?

Thanks very much, theog.
You've got my doubts cleared.

So this method you're suggesting would help in a full recovery even if I ever need to COMPLETELY format my HDD or needed a HDD replacement for this laptop?

Is USB the only option?

I really don't trust removable media and having just a single backup.
I was hoping there maybe a possibility to make something like an .iso image and have multiple copies over DVD's, USB, copies in other external HDD?

I checked the "Gateway MyBackup" and it does have the option to use DVD's as the backup media but does not have the option to do a factory backup (System Image is an available option, though.)
Guess I'm sticking to using your original suggestion and use the USB Recovery Drive method.

Once the USB Recovery Drive is made, is it possible to make backups of the USB Recovery Drive?

Yes if you don't mind spending a little money Macrium Reflect is an excellent back up program and will create Images of your disk or partition or files and folder. Its fully compliant with UEFI GPT disk. It free you only need to pay if you want to do file and folder back ups

Looks like you have the old ACER USB Recovery Drive or Acer have not updated the Acer Recovery app.

The Windows Recovery USB drive & Recovery Partition can be very problematic, I recommend you also make a Windows System Image.
