Laptop with encrypted key in UEFI BIOS - how to obtain ISO

Ok. Rant over. Here's what I found out which may be helpful to someone at some point.

You can download the windows 8.1 install with a windows 8 key. Just download both the installers, run the windows 8 download tool, put in your licence key and click through until the download starts. Cancel it at 1% and run the 8.1 downloader. It then carries on with the download of 8.1. Job done.

Once you have downloaded the installer for windows 8/8.1 you can make an .iso. This won't boot under UEFI. If you want to create a bootable UEFI DVD then you can use the program found in option 3 of this tutorial from this deliciously handy site:
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create

If you want to install windows 8 or 8.1 and activate it later, microsoft publishes generic keys for just such a purpose. These keys do not activate windows, they just allow the installation to progress. Keys can be found here (and a few other forums):
Appendix A: KMS Client Setup Keys

If you have an embedded key in your bios and for some reason want to know what it is then you can find out. Install any version of windows you have lying around (I have a spare copy of windows 7 I don't use any more for just such an occasion) and then install this program:
RWEverything | Read & Write Everything
once installed run and click ACPI followed by MSDM on the lower tab and hazaah! There is the key under the "data" section in all its glory. Pointless. But there it is just in case you want to look at it.

If you manually enter this key into anything from Microsoft directly it will not work. It only works with the recovery media from your OEM. The recovery disk will always pick it up automatically meaning there is no real world use for it as you can't enter it into anywhere manually and have it work.

Why each OEM has to have their own windows install and set of keys is beyond me (apart from making another way to squeeze cash out of the end user). One install disk from Microsoft for all versions of Windows would be much more helpful.
As the OEM manufacturer Windows licence is the cheapest version, basically, you get what you pay for.

Also high grade OEM manufacturers, supply Recovery disks in the box.

Not exactly true, Windows 8.1 install media will reject it when your trying to do a clean install, but you can enter it manually after the install and activate with it. Also regular Retail Windows 8 install media will read and use the OEM embedded key automatically. That embedded OEM key will work for more than just the OEM recovery disks.

Why would the key found in step 3 be any different from the one entered in step 2? You can't activate with the generic install keys?

    1) Download Windows 8.1 RTM ISO image.
    There is NO legal download.

@ genet You do know that you have to be a member of that forum to actually download that utility from the link you posted? On top of that, that forum has a lot of content that deals with pirating Windows! A lot of people on this forum may be reluctant to sign up to that type of site just to get that utility.
