My laptop suffered severe damage.
I want to replace it with a similar machine. upgrade the processor.
I had a 1 terabyte hard drive. Have a good recent image file with daily updates of files and folders to the time of the mishap.
I know anything new will have windows 8.1. would I be able to do a recovery using the current image file? I have many programs and have most of the pkgs. but some no longer exist.
would this work or will I have problems with the BIOS since the prod. key is in there.
could someone share thoughts on this please.

If you made a windows system image while in 8.0, you may have difficulty restoring that from 8.1.

Couple of ways round that would be to mount the .vhd in 8.1 disk mgmt, then use macrium free or similar to make an image of the mounted vhd. That should restore fine. Another rather longer way might be to install 8.0 on the new machine, then restore windows system image.

If you have a Macrium Reflect Disk Image? I think you could go into the BIOS and disable secure boot and enable CSM, then Restore your disk image to dissimilar hardware. Most likely your new system will be UEFI? If your old laptop was MBR there could be issues there. If you could get it to restore and boot? Then re activate with your new Product KEY. As far as I know Macrium Reflect is the only back up program that will work flawlessly with a UEFI System none of he others so far have figured out how to handle the boot manager.

It was a fairly new machine. It was also udfe? and I see in another post to my question that I may have lucked out. I use Macrium Reflect to create images and also had purchased the standard edition so that I could back up files and folders on a daily basis.
thank you for your response. should know later this week if I succeed on the restore.

Thank you! yes I use Macrium Reflect 5.0 and also had purchased the standard edition so that I can use the files and folders option. so hopefully it will work. I did have uefi and the new one will also plus I am staying with the same size drive.
thank you for a response that I was hoping for.

Since you have the standard version, are you able to create a UEFI USB Restore media? Another thread had questions about this since I have the pro version. I know I can. I don't know what the standard version does?

You can do it yourself easily enough. If you just want something like the thing macrium makes, that is simple winpe.

I might have a look at knocking something up to do it automatically.

Clintlgm if I could ask you "what is dissimilar hardware? Right now I have a AIO from HP and I am going to get same thing but different MFG. perhaps ASUS or Lenovo or Toshiba.
I would make sure of the UEFI and 1 t hard drive.
Thank You
