I bought a Win 8 Pro 64 bit upgrade dvd in order to upgrade from Win 7-64bit.
After completion I downloaded win 8.1 pro upgrade from the store.
At the end of the installation it says "getting devices ready".
It starts the process showing the rate and it gets stuck at 6%.
Turned off the laptop (by disconnecting power and battery) and got the following message:

"....could not complete the update to Win 8.1.........
error 0x1900101-0x30018 "

I tried to install this upgrade a third time to no avail.

I checked that I got all the win 8 updates.
I did a system restore.
I updated the nvidia driver.
I checked the requirements, including CMPXCHGb support in my 64bit version, by using Coreinfo.exe.

Error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1

Hello,

We understand that many customers are receiving error 0xC1900101 – 0x40017 when installing Windows 8.1. This error is typically caused by an incompatible driver.

If you are receiving this error:
1.
First, please double-check the error code. There are many variations of error 0xC1900101, each with a different location code -- the error extension, located after the dash. The information in this thread is intended only for location code 0x40017. If you are receiving a different location code, these steps are unlikely to resolve your issue.

2.
Check that you’ve already updated all of your drivers. In particular, if you have an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, make sure you’ve installed the latest Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

3.
Check that you do not have any Frequently Asked Questions - What devices are supported by the SteelSeries Engine? that support the SteelSeries Engine installed on your PC. The SteelSeries Engine software is currently not supported on Windows 8.1. Please uninstall the software before attempting to update to Windows 8.1

Unplugging the USB devices works.

I have Steelseries drivers installed and it's fine, just unplug what USB you have during the reboot update phase.

I did 2 PC's and a laptop trouble free but the 4th PC failed and unplugging USB fixed it.

Edit- nevermind about the Steelseries drivers comment, I forgot that on of the PC's I had an older mouse (Xai) which does work with 8.1 but the Sensei variant doesn't and MS has a hotfix coming soon AFAIK.

Thanks for the help.
My HP laptop (Pavilion dv 9700cto), bought in January 2008, does not carry any Steel series
since everything was provided by HP.
My error number is not similar. It does not show the extension "0x40017" error.
Prior to installing the Win 8 Pro upgrade I updated from HP support all the drivers. But the truth is that those drivers
are for Win Vista because HP does not provide specific Win 7 drivers for this laptop.
My Nvidia graphics card has been updated by the latest driver available.

Maybe somebody can offer "the" solution to my issue. I'll be very grateful.

As an additional note, after the second failure I got in touch with Microsoft support.
The technician took remote control of the laptop to no avail.
