From Windows 7 to Windows 8.1

Hello all, I just have a few questions I need to ask that concern me.

    1. If I upgrade my pc to windows, will I lose my downloads, apps (steam, antivirus, chrome, vlc, skype and such), tv shows and movies, games and that stuff? Because I really wouldn't want to install all of those over again.

    2. So both windows 7 and 8 require 20gb of hdd space, if i upgrade to windows 8, will it take 40 gb of hdd in total? Or just 20gb from windows 8?

    Thanks in advance

You won't if you go to 8, I didn't lose anything. I would update to 8 first. Then if you like it you can go the rest of the way to 8.1. Or stick with 8, there are still many problems with 8.1. Eventually they'll be sorted but 8 has been rock solid from the start for me.

My Windows 8 folder is approx 18.4 Gig right now.

Hmm, yeah i think ill stick to windows 8 for a while and wait for the issues to get sorted out.
So you're absolutely sure I wont lose any of my files?

And thanks for a quick answer .

Nothing is ever absolute when it comes to data security. You should always have a backup copy of important files, two or more copies if the files are of particular importance. Having no backups is asking for trouble. Data can be lost for a wide variety of reasons and you need to be prepared when (not if) something happens.

Yes, but it is not good to assume this.

The more you count on keeping your files the more likely it is that something will happen and you'll lose some of them. Remember Murphy's Law.

And few more things, can it change the performance negatively on my pc if i update 8 over windows 7? Because i have like 2 os installed at the same time?

Does windows 8 use more cpu when "idling" like you're on the desktop with nothing open, does windows 8 use more cpu than w7?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, i really don't have much experience on stuff like this :/.

No, windows 8 should be more improved and slightly faster. It seems pretty good at keeping idling items idle.

Make sure your manufacturer supports drivers for windows 8... you'll need them. If your computer manufacturer has drivers that only go up to 7, I'd stay there. If it goes to 8, or to 8.1 ... go for it.

I would recommend straight off going to 8, then 8.1 right away. No problems that I've seen, and I work with more than 4 computers with 8.1 installed... even more with 8. What I've come to realize is that 8 is hard to understand, and 8.1 is better for new users. Every windows computer isn't perfect and updates are always coming out. You shouldn't fear that 8.1 isn't perfect, it will never be. If you like it, use it.
