Limited bandwidth allowance

My monthly bandwidth allowance is only 10 gb (live in backwoods cell data only).

I have two desktops running windows 8

To download from the store would basically use up all my bandwidth for a month if it worked first try. Or cost me about $120 in over usage.

Does anyone know if the following is the answer for people like me who just don't have the bandwidth to download the iso or use the windows 8 store options ?

Microsoft Windows 8.1 Back-up Media - (Media Only)

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows 8.1 Back-up Media - (Media Only)

I have the retail windows 8 pro upgrade dvd.

I could use the windows 8.1 iso download trick from a friends house but that would mean carrying my whole desktop over to them, no?

It might be - but it's not available yet - so there are no reviews. Your guess is as good as mine. Microsoft has not released any publicity about this AFAIK.

Why take your PC to your friend's?

If you can do the download on your friend's computer and burn a DVD or load onto an inexpensive 4GB USB device - it would be quicker and cheaper. The download can be done on any machine (real or virtual) running Windows 7 or 8.0.

Heavens forbid that you were to make the ISO available to anyone else though! That would be not only cutting out Newegg and Microsoft, but your ISP too.;)

I will have to see what OS my friends are running, 32 or 64. So if 64 win 7 I am good to go?

I just went to my local Staples today to see about the retail versions of Windows 8.1, guess what they only have product keys no physical media. So would still have to download the iso.

What are Microsoft thinking, that everyone one on earth has unlimited high speed data ?
I don't get it, are they that far removed from the masses.

Hmmmm, if he were just making the ISO available without the Product Key, how would that cut out Newegg and Microsoft? He can't do anything with the media if he doesn't have a key and I'm sure that if he has bought his key, he ain't agonna share it. :)

And, having made that argument, I ain't agonna pass any ISOs around because I think it is in the EULA that you can't do that. I just don't see the logic in not being able to give a friend an ISO if it doesn't have a key attached.

Edit: Aha! I just followed the OP's link and now I understand. So, if Newegg can SELL the media without a key, why can't a friend burn a DVD for me? Or I burn one for him?

Maybe we should contact Microsoft and see if it's legal to do that. It should be!

No, won't work. The 8.1 upgrade is only free if you have 8.0 installed. If you have Windows 7 then you have to buy 8.1, just like you would have to buy 8.0.

No, It works on Windows 7 and later.
The 8.1 ISO is freely downloadable if you have a valid Windows 8 key using methods detailed elsewhere on this forum.

You can upgrade using the iso setup in the system you are upgrading from.

You can mount the ISO in 7 using Virtual CloneDrive, or in 8.0 as a native iso mount, so you do not need to make a DVD or USB.

You can also clean boot from DVD or USB to install. I haven't attempted this, but apparently if you add an Ei.cfg to the sources folder, you can avoid entering a key to start installation, but you will still need to activate properly.

Have you done that? As far as I know, it won't work. The upgrade is only from an installed Windows 8.0.

Cool if not true but so far, not what I've read.
