Hi guys,

I have a weird problem with my Windows and I can't find a solution for it - PC Settings are is launching. I am now trying to update to Windows 8.1 I don't get it as an update, and I can't find it in Windows Store. I checked if my version is able to be upgraded and as far as I understood Windows 8 Pro is able to be upgraded. Is there any alternative way to update it without using Windows Store? Thanks in advance.

Hi Brink,

Firstly, I want to apologise for posting my thread in the wrong section. I tried to use the Update Assistant, on the last step I go to the Windows Store, but there is still no update available. May be I will just have to start fresh. :/

Have you already checked to make sure that you have installed all of your Windows Updates before checking in the Store?

As far as I know, if you enter the following into your browser address bar:

(step 4 in Option One of tutorial above)
ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade

Your Windows modern interface will load the Windows Store page for the upgrade to Windows 8.1 you are entitled to - it may take a little time to come up, as it has to detect your system and load the appropriate server link. This will happen even if you have already applied the update to your system:

Screenshot (75).png -In my case 8.1 Pro with Media Center

Even if your Windows 8 system has missing updates, these will not be relevant to the Windows 8.1 upgrade, which will load the current updates for Windows 8.1

Thanks for the answers of both of you. I have installed all updates, or at least that is what the Windows Update says. I also tried to use this command and start it from browser, but this leads me to the home screen of Windows Store. I have this problem with my Windows for which I didn't find a solution http://www.eightforums.com/performa...s-after-restoring-windows-8-a.html#post276804 , is this possible cause the problem with Windows store?

Proudbg - have you cleared your store cache? - http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13133-store-cache-clear-windows-8-a.html

The ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade command can take a while to come up in the store, it is not instant.

Your Laptop problems may be further symptoms of an overheating problem - the GPU may have started to have solder connection problems, or just thermal cutout systems may have contributed to corruption of files during operation.

Please fill in your system specs in your user profile to identify potential hardware problems.

@Brink Thanks for linking in Shawn.

Hi guys thanks a lot for your time. As you have seen from my previous thread PC settings is not working and sometimes explorer.exe does not start (like now). I have already tried this tool, I installed manually this update, but still can't upgrade. I noticed something strange, in the update history I have two updates from yesterday 29.10, but particularly this one has not been installed and it didn't give me any clue that there are pending updates. About the heating, I really don't know the Dell software for self-monitoring doesn't find any errors anymore, so I guess there shouldnt be any hardware problems.

PS: I tried to boot in safe mode and PC settings is working correctly, but I can't run windows store to make the upgrade in safe mode :/

Searching Dell Inspiron 5110 overheating brings up a load of results - in truth all laptops overheat at times, but some are worse than others.

If the thermal cutout temperature is reached it can cause corruption in the registry and with the system files.

Explorer.exe not starting is a symptom of something not right with your system, as are your black screens. Your system may have not been well before you made the backup now running on your new hard disk.

As David Bailey suggested, it may be time for a reset or refresh.

Finally there is a progress!!! PC settings is working, explorer.exe is starting in the last two reboots normally, but I still can't update it. And the problem was... avast.... removed some of the options in the behavioural shield and it started perfectly! I will uninstall it and see if I will be able to upgrade!
